Chemicals transfer

~cid a ttacl

On the safe side with perfluorelastomer seals The sparkling sensation created by citric acid on the tongue is one of the more pleasant aspects to an acid. Generally speaking, however, acids present a much less pleasant experience for chemical engineers and chemical plant operators. It is only possible for them to prevent leaks at the connecting joints and interfaces between apparatus, units and process components by considering modem sealing technology. Specially developed for use in chemically aggressive environments with high thermal loads, the perfluorelastomer (FFKM)

from Freudenberg Dichtungsund Schwingungstechnik has proved highly successful in this regard. With a resistance to acidity which is very close to pure

PTFE, and with high elasticity, perfluorelastomers are the ideal sealing materials for aggressive media. O-rings in special forms and precision mouldings made of perfluorelastomers are available in various different dimensions as part of the standard Simrit ® range from Freudenberg. Complex sealing solutions are designed in close cooperation with the customers. CONTACT Freudenberg Dichtungs- und Schwingungstechnik KG, D-69465 Weinheim, Germany. Versatile pump for noxious slurries A highly versatile, general-duty pump for the chemical industries is Genflo's latest innovation. The S-Pump is a robust jet pump that can be used in several quite different configurations - as a submersible pump, as a hopper for feeding slurries, or as a powerful vacuum pump. It can transfer solids or liquids, including the most noxious slurries, over substantial horizontal distances and through vertical lifts to 30 m or more. Lightweight and built to pass through the smallest manhole, the S-Pump will work 'in the dry', totally submerged or as a vacuum generator, and in any position. Removing the pump cover reveals a specially-designed hopper grille through which solids can be shovelled and slurries screened. A clever 'machine scanning' program is how the new Vibscanner takes regular measurements by graphically displaying measurement locations one after another. Teamed up with the patented Vibcode transducer system and encoded measurement locations, this user-friendly, yet reliable data collection system is the latest innovation from Prtiftechnik to hit the machine monitoring market. The system's handy data collector features built-in sensors for no less than six important machine parameters: vibration acceleration, displacement and velocity according to the new ISO 10816-3 standard as well as bearing condition, temperature and rpm. Other process parameters can be metered via 4 - 20 mA analogue signal input or entered manually. A built-in electronic notebook lets the maintenance technician jot down standard observations such as "oil leak", and four LEDs located above the display clearly

This title - the fifth in a twelve book series following the publication of Vibration, Thermography, Wear Debris Analysis, and Corrosion - is an ideal "entry level" text for engineers and maintenance professionals with an interest in acoustic emission and ultrasonic monitoring. The book does not attempt to baffle with technology, but introduces it at an understandable level, touching on the basic theory and concepts, available equipment and practical issues relevant to the engineer. It also highlights several case studies to which the reader can relate. Acoustic Emission & Ultrasonics is published as a hardback book and is approximately 150 pages

in length. The book is priced at £35 / US$60 plus postage, although readers will qualify for a 20% discount if they quote this magazine when ordering.

Contents include Introduction to acoustic emission & ultrasonic monitoring; Basic concepts and theory; Practical issues; Equipment and instrumentation; Applications and case studies; Buyers' guide. A full contents list for the title is available via E-mail, post or fax from Coxmoor. Other books in this twelve title series focus on vibration, wear debris analysis, corrosion, noise, thermography and oil analysis. The full series will be published before the end of the year 2000.
