Erratum Regarding Dalrymple et al, “Infection-Related Hospitalizations in Older Patients With ESRD” [Am J Kidney Dis 2010; 56:522-530] In the article titled “Infection-Related Hospitalizations in Older Patients With ESRD” (Dalrymple et al, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, 56(3):522-530, 2010), there was an error related to the study’s use of the death codes to examine infection-related death. As stated in the article, the study cohort of patients initiating hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2002 was assembled from US Renal Data System (USRDS) records and was followed up until study end on December 31, 2004. Recently, the authors learned that new death codes had been introduced into the USRDS in the last year of observation, in particular, the last 5 months of the study’s follow-up period. After re-examining the data presented in the article in the context of the new death codes, the authors determined that they would have classified an additional 277 deaths as infection related. Thus, the total deaths classified as infection related should have been 14,265, not 13,988, and 0.4% of deaths and 1.9% of infection-related deaths were misclassified in the article as published. The authors regret this error. The authors do not believe that the revised data alter the original conclusions of the article.
