2.11. ESA’S DIRECTOR GENERAL RECEIVED BY THE FEDERAL GERMAN CHANCELLOR’=’
The Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr H. Kohl, received ESA’s Director General, Professor Reimar Lust, on 3 October 1984. The Federal Bulletin described the meeting as follows: “On 3 October 1984 the Federal Chancellor, Dr Kohl, received the new Director General of the European Space Agency, Professor Reimar Lust, for a detailed discussion of space matters. Professor Lust has been widely known for many years as the President of the Max Planck Society and took up his post as ESA Director General on 1 September 1984. The Federal Chancellor stressed the significance of the joint European projects in this major area of advanced future technology and paid tribute to the role and past success of ESA in providing Europe’s platform for space endeavour. The Chancellor emphasized that European co-operation in the peaceful uses of space was an element that was as essential as transatlantic co-operation. It would be one of the major factors in deciding in the next few months on Germany’s participation in the new long-term projects:

On 23 October 1984 Mr. Erik Quistgaard, Director General of the European Space Agency from May 1980 to August 1984 was made an Officer of the “Legion d’Honneur” by Professeur H. Curien, French Minister of Research and Technology, and former Chairman of the ESA Council, in recognition of services rendered in promoting European space research and technology during his term of office.
2.13. IRAN BOOSTS INMARSAT MEMBERSHIP TO 41”*
The Islamic Republic of Iran has become the 41st country to join the International Maritime Satellite Organization (Inmarsat) and has designated the Telecommunication Company of Iran as the Iranian Signatory, effective from 12 October 1984. Iran is the seventh country from the Middle East region to join Inmarsat. The others are Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
