6.1. INDIAN PHYSICIST APPOINTED A REGIONAL COSTED REPRESENTATIVE”’
The ICSU Executive Board at its September meeting accepted the resignation of Dr S. Radhakrishna, the excellent and energetic Scientific Secretary of ICSU’s Committee on Science and Technology in Developing Countries (COSTED) for over 10 years. The Board approved the proposed reorganization of COSTED, abolishing the position of central Scientific Secretary and giving more autonomy to the six COSTED Regional Offices. Central policy issues will still be handled by the COSTED Executive Committee and administrative matters will be handled by the ICSU Secretariat in Paris. Dr R. R. Daniel, a distinguished Indian cosmic ray and space physicist, has been appointed Regional Representative of COSTED for Asia. Dr Daniel brings to this position long experience with ICSU through COSPAR, in which he has chaired the Panel on Space Research in Developing Countries since 1982, and through the IGBP in which he is National IGBP Chairman for India. Dr Daniel has just retired as Senior Professor of Physics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Bombay, and will hold the title of Emeritus Scientist for the Indian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (ICSIR). The present composition of COSTED is: Chairman: Sir John Kendrew (UK); Treasurer: Dr Joachim Wiercimok (FRG); Ordinary Members: Dr J. Hurley (USA), Dr B. Sitter (Switzerland); Regional Representatives: Arab region: Dr A. Badran (Jordan), Asia: Dr R. R. Daniel (India), Caribbean: Dr H. Charles (Trinidad), East Africa: Dr D. A. Otieno (Kenya), West Africa: Dr A: Maduemezia (Nigeria) and Latin America: Dr R. Villegas (Venezuela).
6.2. EUROPEAN ISY ASSOCIATION: MME JACQUELINE GOMERIEUX’*’
Madame Jacqueline Gomerieux, formerly Head of the ESA Press Service, has been charged by ESA with the preparation of the events to be promoted by ESA for celebration of the International Space Year (ISY) in 1992. Additionally, from 1 March 1989, Mme Gomerieux will contribute to the setting up, management and promotion of the European ISY Association being created at the initiative of Eurospace.
