Jute shortage could affect fi bre prices

June 29-July 1, Edinburgh, Scotland Interflam ‘99 - 8th International Conference on fire and flammability Interscience Communications Ltd. Guildford Grove, London SE10 8JT. UK; tel+44-18 1 692 5050; fax: +44-181 692 5 15.5

The price of natural fibres could rise in the wake of a worldwide shortage of jute, resulting from a severe drought that has hit soil preparation and sowing in India and Bangladesh, the two largest producers. The price of a benchmark grade has risen by nearly 10% in the last month, to Rs 10 150 (US$237) per tonne. Traders forecast that the new season will start in June with much lower stocks of the fibre, and larger quantities will not come onto the market until mid-August, which will make it difficult for factories to build up normal inventories. Opening stocks in Bangladesh are expected to fall to less than 800 000 bales, from more than 2 million last year. Production in India has fallen from 11.15 million bales to less than 8 million.

CONFERENCES World forum for medical materials and technology An opportunity to gauge the current position of PVC in the medical sector (of fundamental interest to all concerned with PVC additives, especially plasticizers) will be offered at MEDTEC, the Medical Equipment Design and Technology Conference and Exhibition, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from 21-23 September. More than 75% of medical devices are single-use disposables made of plastics, and plastics (particularly PVC) have been under attack, on fears of hazards to human health and to the environment. The European market is estimated to be worth some $46 billion, and is growing at about 6% a year, The leading plastics products are kits and trays, infusion-related supplies and diagnostic/laboratory disposables.
