A n oral surgeon treating a patient with a long-standing restricted mouth opening generally concentrates his attention on the cond y l a r region and perhaps forgets the coronoid process. The present monograph therefore has an obvious mission. The aut h o r gives a good survey of the morphologic aspects and the clinical features of the coronoid process enlargement and discusses the etiology, but he gives no conclusive answer except to elucidate the little known trismuspseudocampylodactyly syndrome, in which the enlargement is presumed to be attributable to excessive pull by the temporal muscle. Concerning the radiologic diagnosis he gives a new very detailed method based on the orthopantomogram. Strangely enough, this method has been used in only one case, so its clinical value is therefore not yet proven. In the surgical treatment the author correctly prefers the intraoral approach, but when referring to the extraoral procedures he could have discountenanced more vigorously the quite senseless z y g o m a t i c and posterior flap approaches. This thesis does not essentially increase our present knowledge, but it nevertheless deserves to be read because it calls attention to a clinical - often overlooked p h e n o m e n o n of practical interest. Kai Lund, Copenhagen

This textbook gives an all-round introduction in the surgical treatment of, primarily, developmental j a w deformities, but correctly concludes that certain acquired deformities can be treated advantageously with the same surgical principles. The various chapters deal with diagnosis and planning, the treatment of the deformities viewed separately, and finally the treatment of combined maxillary and mandibular deformities, which is described chiefly through case histories. The reviewer is gratified to see that the authors stress the importance of the close co-operation between the orthodontist and the surgeon. The text is very clear and detailed, and the description of the technical procedures together with the excellent illustration material serve nearly as an "Atlas of orthodontic surgery". The book is sincerely recommended to all orthodontic surgeons. Kai Lund, Copenhagen
