this study, the effect of daily exercise such as walking on human neutrophil function was examined as a first step in phylogenetical studies. First, we examined whether exercise affected total numbers of peripheral blood leukocytes and neutrophils. Results showed that exercise increased neutrophil fiquency, but hardly affected total numbers of peripheral blood leukocytes. Furthermore, the effect on in vitro phagocytosis of yeast particles by neutrophils was analyzed revealing that exercise augmented phagocytic activity of

neutrophils. Moreover, quantification of the formazan pigment formed by the reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium revealed that the production of active oxygen was increased by exercise. IL-l production by neutrophils also showed an increase. These results clearly suggested that moderate exercise in everyday life had the enhancing effects on neutrophil numbers and functions such as phagocytosis and the production of active oxygen or IL- 1.
