IOTADERMA #182 What is a ‘‘psychrophile,’’ and why is it a very relevant term in dermatology? Robert I. Rudolph, MD, FACP Answer will appear in the April 2009 issue of the Journal in the JAAD Online section.

FEBRUARY IOTADERMA (#181) What is the ‘‘Malphigian stratum’’? Answer: It is the ‘‘living’’ epidermis, but does not include the stratum corneum. It is named in honor of the 17th century Italian physician Marcello Malphighi (1628-1694). This pioneering anatomist and histologist has been immortalized with 15 eponymic items. They are the Malpighian bodies, capsule, corpuscles, glands, nodules, and stigmas of the spleen; the corpuscles, glomerulus, pyramids, and tufts located in the kidney; the layer, rete, stratum, and cells found in our beloved skin; vesicles in the lung; and, finally, tubules (in the guts of insects!). REFERENCE Scarani P, Salvioli GP, Eusebi V. Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694). A founding father of modern anatomic pathology. Am J Surg Pathol 1994;18:741-6.
