JAAD ONLINE IOTADERMA #194 What is ‘‘Fournier’s syphiloma’’? Robert I. Rudolph, MD, FACP Answer will appear in the JAAD Online section of the April 2010 issue of the Journal.

FEBRUARY IOTADERMA (#193) What is an ‘‘enamel organ’’ and why is it important for dermatologists? Answer: The ‘‘enamel organ’’ is the embryologic formation which develops around the sixth week of fetal growth and eventuates into both the deciduous and the permanent teeth. This area can be adversely affected in many diverse dermatologic diseases, ranging from the genetic (as in the various ectodermal dysplasias, where the teeth are often missing or misshapen, and in congenital erythropoietic porphyria, wherein the teeth are colored red because of porphyrin incorporation), the infectious (the famous Hutchinson teeth and mulberry molars of congenital syphilis), and even the iatrogenic (tetracycline exposure in young children leading to a grayish-brown discoloration of the teeth).
