UK PATENTS COMPONENTS Method of manufacturing a fishing rod (Daiwa Seiko Inc, Japan) GB 2 206 307 A (5 January 1989) A tubular fishing rod is formed by wrapping prepreg cut to appropriate angles around a tapered mandrel, ensuring a smooth overlap at the joints. Both GRFP and CRFP may be used.

MATERIALS Surface coated silicon carbide whiskers (Tokai Carbon Co. Ltd., Japan) GB 2 206 572 A (11 January 1989) Carbon (7-10 Angstroms) coated SiC whiskers are prepared by firing thermosetting resin covered SiC whiskers. Similarly, Si3N4 coatings are stained by coating with an organosilicon polymer and firing in a nitriding atmosphere. Dispersible organoclay for unsaturated polyester (ECC International Ltd., UK) GB 2 206 573 A (11 January 1989) An organophilic clay gellant which can be dispersed directly with unsaturated polyester resins is prepared by shear mixing a clay suspension and adding quaternary ammonium compounds. Laminated product of aluminium and glass fibres (Vereinigti Aluminium-Werkr Akt., FRG) GB 2 206 844 A (18 January 1989) A laminate is described which consists of aluminium ribbons of t h i c k n e s s 0.05-0.25 mm and 0.4-0.8 mm bonded to an interlayer of 3-10 mm thick glass fibre mat. A heat sealing polyethylene ionomer resin is used. Heat resistant reinforced foam (Central Glass Co. Ltd., Japan) GB 2 207 913 A (25 January 1989) A heat and thermal shock resistant glass is obtained by dispersing a 0.2-5 wt % discontinuous ferritic chromium stainless wire with an expansion coefficient 1-1.3 times higher than the glass. Similar results can be achieved with acicular and flake shaped mineral fillers.

PROCESSES Method of preparing toughened epoxy polymers (The Secretary of State for Defence, UK) GB 2 206 584 A (11 January (1989)

COMPOSITES. MAY 1989

A relatively rapid curing of elastomer modified epoxy resin formulations provides polymers with high fracture toughness. For example, a 7-fold increase in Gk can be achieved without a reduction in Tg or Era. The amine hardener used is piperidine and curing temperatures higher than normal are used. After treatment of carbon fibre (Mitsubishi Rayon Co. Ltd., Japan) GB 2 206 894 A (18 January 1989) The electrolytic oxidation of carbon fibres in an aqueous solution of pH = 7 and 0.2-4MNH4 ~ is followed by treatment in water at an ultrasonic frequency of 20 kHz. The fibres have high strength and excellent interfacial strength characteristics. Moulding corrugations (United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, UK) GB 2 207 081 A (25 January 1989) A technique for moulding corrugations into a long sheet of FRP is described.

US PATENTS COMPONENTS Composite leaf spring suspension with integral sway bar Booher, B. V. (Aldersgate, Leucadia, CA 92024, USA) US Pat 4 718 693 (12 January 1988) The means of housing a pair of elongate leaf springs, each made of composite material, within a vehicle suspension system and the means of connecting them to the vehicle frame, the shock absorbers, and to a sway bar for operational efficiency are described. Method for producing sound bar for percussive musical instruments Sawada, S. and Murase, Y. (Nippon Gakki Seizo Kabushiki Kaisha, Japan) US Pat 4 718 964 (12 January 1988) The method for producing a sound bar for percussive musical instruments comprises: forming a unidirectional fibre-reinforced plastic plate, the fibres arranged in the longitudinal direction; forming a number of longitudinal pores in the plate; bonding a number of these plates together in a face-toface combination; and making a cut-out in one face for tonal pitch adjustment. Fiber reinforced synthetic material wheel Daniels, V. A., Park, J. and Ivanyi, S. (Ford Motor Company, Dearborn, MI, USA) US Pat 4 721 342 (26 January 1988) A compression-mouldable preform of a synthetic material wheel comprises a planar spider portion made from random chopped fibre-reinforced resin surrounded by two tubular sections made from sheets of resin reinforced with random chopped fibres and continuous fibre. The first section surrounds

the spider portion about an axis normal to its plane and the second section is coaxial to, but extending beyond, the first. Dental implants and accessories therefore Lonca, P. (Centre Commercial LE BARP, 33830 Belin, France) US Pat 4 722 688 (2 February 1988) A one-piece dental implant made from carbon/carbon material comprises a cylindrical root portion designed to extend into a recess in the jawbone and come into direct contact with bone tissue and a frustoconical portion adapated to project from the gum and accept a dental crown. End connection for composite shafts Salzman, R. N., Blakley, R. A., Schutte, M. D. and McDermott, K. T. (General Signal Corporation, Rochester, NY, USA) US Pat 4 722 717 (2 February 1988) The means of connecting a connector sleeve at the end of a tubular shaft, made of fibre-reinforced plasic material, by means of interconnecting grooves to the non-structural inner surface, of solidified composite communited fibre-reinforced resin, of the shaft so that the thrust, torque and bending loads transmitted from the shaft to the connector sleeve are supported is described. Racket having different portions comprised of different materials Du Gardin, G. and Macaire, R. (Skis Rossignol SA, Voiron, France) US Pat 4 725 059 (16 February 1988) The body of a racket, the head of which may be strung to form a ball-striking surface, is described. The body comprises three main portions: a shaft; two branches from the shaft forming a throat; and a head, formed with a frame portion connected to the throat. Each of the portions is made with a core enveloped by a sheath of fibre web impregnated with resin; the composition of these materials is different in each portion. The fibre webs overlap where the portions join but the ends of the cores of the throat portion are offset from one another where they join the shaft. Set of golf clubs Iwanaga, T. (Sumitomo Rubber Industries Incorporated, Kobe, Japan) US Pat 4 725 060 (16 February 1988) A set of golf glubs is described. Each has a fibre-reinforced plastic shaft which incorporates helically wound reinforcing filaments (either carbon or glass) over the entire length. Each also has an intermediate flex section between the head and the grip. In this section, the filament winding angle is greater than in the other sections of the club. The position of the flex section varies from club to club. Injection skis and their process of manufacture Maruyama, T. (Kabushiki Kaisha Swallow Ski, Nagano, Japan) US Pat 4 725 070 (16 February 1988)
