The University of Charleroi in Belgium has acquired a six axis filament winding machine. The computer numerically controlled (CNC) equipment, made by Pultrex of Clacton-on-Sea, UK, winds impregnated fibre onto a single spindle. The fibre feed eye can move in three linear axes and it rotates and yaws. The spindle can rotate too. The university’s research body will use the machine to make aircraft structural struts for the European Airbus for testing. The establishment also acquired a closed loop control system to precisely tensions up to eight tibres as they are drawn into the feed eye. An impregnation system, an integrated manufacturing system and program generation and CAD/CAM software made up the rest of the order.

A cutting head which makes little noise in operation and which fits onto any fibre chopping machinery has been developed by Solatrim. The device’s blades cut glass or syrthetic fibre accurately and consistently, says the Deeside based manufacturer. The blades push into place in retaining slots on the head. They form a 5’ helix on a backing roller, ensuring that the cutter operates quietly. Fibres feed into the cutter and are ejected by spring loaded bars. The ejectors are particularly useful when cutting wet fibres or when making chop lengths of less than 6 mm. Each head cuts fibre to a given length of between 3.2 mm and 50 mm. wear and chipping. Replacing them is only a semiskilled operation. Solatrim believes that the cutter may be the most advanced design available, and that compared to traditional equipment it improves the quality of chopped fibres and reduces production costs.

Mixers with Z shaped steel blades can efficiently combine the resin, hardener and reinforcement in dough moulding compounds (DMCs). The blades’ shape forces mixing materials from the edges of the mixer’s trough to its centrr and the blades also shear through these materials.
