ATK wins further Ariane 5 contract
.
ATK AEROSPACE Composite Structures Co, Clearfield, Utah, USA, has been awarded conworth approximately tracts US$1.8 million from Spanish aerospace company EADS CASA Espacio to produce composite structures for the Ariane 5 space launch vehicle. Ariane 5 is the first newgeneration heavy-lift launcher to enter commercial service. The contracts represent a significant expansion of the work ATK is already doing on the Ariane 5. Under a nine-month contract valued at around $1 million, ATK Aerospace Composite Structures will fabricate a composite adapter that serves as a link between the vehicle’s upper stage and the payload. A second contract, worth around $800 000, involves the production of additional interstage skirts, which connect the lower and upper stages of the vehicle. additional These contracts follow on from an
Fiberline goes ‘green’ DANISH pultruder Fiberline Composites AS has installed its own wind turbine, which now supplies all the company’s energy requirements. Installing the turbine makes sense for the company in financial as well as environmental terms, says Henrik managing director and the turbine Thorning, blades are also an excellent example of the strength and durability of composites. Fiberline, based in Kolding, recently completed the installation of the 1 MW wind turbine, an investment of DKr6.7 million. With its 27 m blades, the turbine produces approximately 30% more electricity than the company can use. The wind turbine is a further step in the company’s efforts to implement ‘greener’ manufacturing processes. It already uses closed moulding processes to ensure minimal emissions and has a programme for recycling/reusing production waste. Together with other European companies it is also working to develop a general
original $4 million award received in 1999. Work for both contracts will be performed at the company’s Southern Composites Centre in Iuka, Mississippi. Space launch vehicles are becoming an increasingly important market for ATK’s composites structures. The company claims to operate more fibre placement machines than any other supplier in the world. It also employs hand lay-up and filament winding technologies. ATK Aerospace Composite Structures is part of ATK’s Aerospace segment, which comprises the group’s propulsion and composite structures operations and had sales of $530 million in 2000. CASA, based in Madrid, is Spain’s largest aerospace company and a founding member of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS), one of the world’s largest aerospace companies. L
