A sales company for Tikkurila’s industrial coatings started operating in St Petersburg in 1998. Tikkurila is the leading paints and coatings company in Finland, Sweden and Russia and one of the leaders in its field in the Baltic States. Tikkurila provides consumers, professional painters and industrial customers with branded products and expert services in approximately 40 countries. Its range consists of decorative paints and coatings for the wood and metal industries. In 2008, the company had revenue of €648 M and a staff of 4,000. Ferro reports 1Q 2009 results: performance coatings Ferro Corp’s net sales from its performance coatings segment fell from $160,792,000 in 1Q 2008 (ended 31 Mar 2008) to $108,588,000 in 1Q 2009 (ended 31 Mar 2009), while segment income fell from $9,480,000 to $599,000. Sales declined in the performance coatings segment primarily as a result of weak demand from automotive and construction applications. The segment recorded a loss as a result of lower sales volume. Reductions in inventory during the quarter also contributed to the losses. used instead of vegetable oilbased chemicals. The company aims to develop raw materials, which are not in competition with food crops. DSM NeoResins recently unveiled NeoRad E-30, a resin for UV coatings that is primarily derived from soya oil. The DSM Group is also working with French firm Roquette to produce bio-based succinic acid, a coatings resin intermediate. A demonstration facility is slated to come online by end-2009. Change in Spain for Rohm and Haas Rohm and Haas Powder Coatings plans to vacate its powder coatings manufacturing plant at Castellon, Spain and set up a smaller unit in the same area. The transfer will happen in 20092010. The move into a smaller operational set-up will allow the company to retain its competitiveness and continue delivering good service to its customers. Jotun targets 8% market share Jotun, Norway, currently has production facilities of wet paint of 50 M litres and powder coatings of 10,000 tonnes capacities in Pune. The plant comprises recycling process and the waste produced is one of the main markets for Jotun. The company is getting 8% of the market share by the end of 2010. Indian paint industry is worth Rup 16,000 crores and has a growth of 12%/y. The average per capita consumption of paints is 15 kg globally. Per capita consumption is 0.8 kg/y in India, 4 kg in South East Asia and 22 kg in developed countries. Industrial paint sector occupies 30% and decorative paint sector captures 70% of the paint market. (1 crore=10 M, 1 lakh=100,000).

Jotun plans second plant Jotun Paints India plans to set up a second factory in the National Capital Region (NCR). Also, the Jotun Group subsidiary is hiking output at its Ranjangaon facility, near Pune, to meet growing domestic demand for marine, protective and decorative paints. A total of $25 M was spent for the plant and machinery in 2008. The Ranjangaon factory can produce 50 M litres of wet paint and 10,000 tonnes of powder coatings. It has over 250 employees. In 2008, the company sold 600,000 litres of wet paint and 1600 tonnes of powder coatings. Jotun Paints India’s objective is to expand volume sales by 20-30% in 2009.

Russian Coatings Russian Coatings evolved from a major lead white producer during pre-evolution Russia to a major core manufacturer for the automotive industry in the USSR. In 2008, the company’s volume sales reached 40,110 tonnes of paint material, valued at more than $140 M. Russian Coatings has 1200 workers who manufacture OEM, car refinish, decorative, industrial, powder and anticorrosive materials. In 2006, the company formed a jv with DuPont Corp for the development, production, sale and technical support of OEM paint materials. In 2008, DuPont Russian Coatings started providing cataphoretic primer pastes to one of Toyota’s auto plants. The material has been produced in Germany but Russian Coatings is now setting up space and a line for the production of cataphoretic primer in-house. Asian Paints net dips by 54%: Oct-Dec 2008 Asian Paints saw its net profit plummet by 54% to Rup 50.1 crore for the quarter ended 31 Dec 2008, on a standalone basis. The company, however, recorded a 9.8% gain in net sales to Rup 1006.4 crore from Rup 916.2 crore for 3Q FY 2007-2008. An Asian Paints official said that the paint sector relies on overall economic growth, and any incidence of a slowdown has an impact on its performance. Creation of Dow Coating Materials Following its acquisition of Rohm and Haas, Dow has created a new business called Dow Coatings Materials. The business includes Dow Coating Solutions and Rohm and Haas’ Paint and Coating Materials. After experiencing a significant increase in activity and worldwide product sales for Nansulate energy saving and asset protection coatings beginning in the month of Apr 2009 to levels which exceeded sales in Apr 2008 by 12%, the company has continued that trend by increasing sales in May 2009 to a level almost triple that of May 2008.
