Field-by-field viewdata A viewdata system that transmits information field-by-field, rather than in full pages, has been launched by Air Call Computer Systems. Viewdata Gold, claimed to avoid the traditional problem of viewdata systems, i.e. slow response times, can provide a response in less than 1 s using ordinary telephone lines. It can support thousands of users concurrently online, and, being designed to the European standard, can cater for a selection of international standards. Also, Viewdata Gold interacts

directly with the applications data base, updating it immediately. Instead of having to change frames at every stage of a transaction, it presents a series of user prompts and responses on the same page. The system also offers a mailbox function for internal mail, price changes, special offers, etc. When a user sends a message using the mailbox, the recipient is advised by the system that a message is waiting. In addition, the sender can review messages sent to find out which ones have been received, and which ones

Epson's PX-8 briefcase personal computer has been adopted by Geisco as a portable interface for its global computing network. The PX-8, which features an 8-line, scrolling liquid crystal display and weighs less than 2 kg, has been modified by Geisco to interface with its Quik-Comm international electronic mail service. To allow the PX-8 to communicate with its network, which is locally accessible in 31 countries, Geisco has added a customized chip and extra software to provide file editing, automated sign-on and error-free transmission facilities. Staff and management, particularly in sales and marketing roles, will be able to use the portable PC to store and process information before transmitting it via a local telephone call to Geisco's network and central computers. Dealer workstation A multi-purpose, fully integrated workstation for foreign exchange and bond dealing has been launched by BIS Software. The Midas Dealer Workstation offers dealers a choice of interface devices for simultaneous, real-time access to domestic and international wire services and inhouse systems for identifying cash positions, limits and modelling data. Apart from the ergonomic advantages of having a single interface to all information, the workstation provides a faster means of dealing than conventional electronic dealing systems. Each workstation is centred on a multi-function, general purpose IBM Personal Computer with a colour screen for highlighting significant data and high speed switching devices for connection to wire service monitors and 'back office' computer systems. The workstation is open-ended in that it can be programmed to connect to any wire service or computer system to suit individual customer requirements. The input device supplied as standard with the workstation is a data entry tablet. Users can pre-code such elements as customer names, accounts and currencies to reduce 'keystrokes', spelling and keying errors.
