Viewdata for lectures The introduction of Viewdata has led to the design, in Philips' Research Laboratories in Eindhoven, of a number of components with which this reproduction facility can be used in many .different situations. For example, it is possible with these components and special, cheap monitors easily to illustrate lectures with coloured text and diagrams. The equipment can also be used at information stands or to display explanatory texts at exhibitions.

although special requirements may be accommodated. Purple or blue background colours are available in the standard modes of reflective, transflective and transmissive. The transmissive version is suitable for applications where a wide viewing angle and cosmetic appeal is important, such as in scales, petrol pumps and various consumer goods.

Wide angle Icds A range of Icds from Waycom have a 180 ° viewing angle. The dichroic displays use the nematic/cholesteric transition and have current consumption comparable with that of other displays. They can replace standard nematic displays as they have compatible drive circuits and connections. A range of digits from 3½ to 16 is offered,

Several other products, all breaking new ground technically, are in the pipeline. A hand-held computer terminal and a small microcomputer are planned.

Less need for software

A standard Viewdata monitor makes it possible to reproduce texts and simple drawings in a maximum of seven colours. These are compiled from a range of alphanumeric and symbol characters. An image, which can combine text and diagrams as well as incorporating different letter formats and a flashing facility, consists of 24 lines each of 40 characters. The system is intended to replace automatic slide projectors and saves the time taken to prepare slides or to sort out mechanical hitches associated with their use. The system can be installed with a limited range Viewdata package to give continuous access to information required by the user.

office and site planning, technical operation planning, and the construction of business performance charts.

A range of forms up to A4 size can be used on the DataPad

Product analysis The policy of a company formed just last year, Oxford Computing, is to analyse established products with a view to making radical improvements. Thus a detailed study of existing digitizers led to the production of the DataPad 1, a product that claims to be faster and more versatile than other digitizers on the market but is also of simpler design. The DataPad software overcomes the normal problems associated with swift entry and compilation of graphs, curves and many other shapes on low resolution vdus and screens. Straight lines and columns, rectangles, etc. can be drawn on the screen merely by touching co-ordinates on the DataPad and the instruction to draw the line/shape defined. The Pad is intended for

A range of colour graphics desktop computers and business systems, marketed by Techex, are available with cp/m programmes for a variety of business applications.
