Fiftieth anniversary of the oral pathology course of Professor William G. Shafer in Brazil

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Fiftieth anniversary of the oral pathology course of Professor William G. Shafer in Brazil To the Editor: In August 1964, Professor William G. Shafer directed a course in oral pathology at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, which represented a hallmark for the development of the specialty in Brazil. Invited by Professor Sylvio Bevilacqua, Professor Shafer came to Brazil and administered oral pathology training for an entire month, comprising lectures and slide seminars covering a period of 160 hours. Fourteen professors from different Brazilian states attended the course, including 12 oral pathologists, 1 periodontist, and 1 oral surgeon. Figure 1 shows these course attendees with Professor Shafer in the main entrance of the old School of Dentistry of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. The participants of Professor Shafer’s course likely represented some of the pioneers in this specialty, and the knowledge acquired by them was
fundamental for the dissemination and continuation of both teaching and practicing oral pathology in Brazil. Unfortunately, with the exception of Professor Renato Kobler P. L. Sampaio, all of the oral pathologists in this group have passed away. This letter is in honor of them.
