PREFORHS FOR

(Dec.), 23

The National Engineering Laboratory in the UK is to run a threeyear research programme into the manufacture of continuous fibre The aim component preforms for use in resin transfer moulding. is to develop a demonstrator machine for the rapid production of preforms, and reduce the cost of conventional processes in terms of production speed and wastage levels.

RESIN TRANSFER IXXJLDING

PRODUCT INFORMATION Freemix 43-2040, is a halogen-free DMC which is now commercially available from Freeman Chemicals (UK). It has low smoke emission, and combines electrical arc resistance with high fire resistance. It is therefore very suitable for the manufacture of arc chutes and dividers and fire barriers, as well as a large range of heavy industrial applications. It is polyester-based.

Ems-Chemie AG has introduced a flame retarded unreinforced nylon Crilon T3O2 VO is for injection moulding and 66 formulation. extrusion applications. The new grade is said to incorporate a unique flame retardant package which is effective at very low levels; Grilon T3O2 VO has UL-94 VO recognition down to 0.030 inch (0.76 mm) for all colours. In addition, because it blankets flame by releasing nitrogen, Grilon ~302 VO is completely free of the phosphorus and halogen-based compounds widely used in other fire retarding systems.

WARDANT 66

The fire retardant is said to have a minimal effect on both the mechanical and electrical properties, which allows thin-walled sections to be moulded to UL-94 VO standards.

SELF-COLDURING

Watford based Mercury Plastics has signed the first UK distributorship agreement for the Magnum 3000 series of ABS resins from Dow Europe. In a colouring package aimed at moulding shops with throughputs of less than 100 tons/year, Mercury will sell the Magnum resins with a suitable masterbatch. Mercury aims to deliver both stock colour masterbatch and the ABS resins within 24 hours in typical delivery sizes from l-5 tons or even down to a single 25 kg bag.
