F in al action w as taken on recom m endation of the B oard of Trustees by the H ouse o f D elegates at th e St. L ouis m eeting. In 1940, H o w ard E. M iller, o f C h ica g o , was appointed by the B oard o f Trustees as ch airm an o f a spe cial com m ittee to consider the establish m ent o f a jou rn a l o f oral surgery. D r. M ille r has w ritten a b rief sketch of the m any activities th at w ill lead to the a p pearance o f the new pu b lication in J an uary. D r. M iller’s accou n t follow s : The need for a special journal devoted exclusively to oral surgery and allied subjects has long been recognized. Articles pertaining to the subject can be found in all types of journals, but, in many cases, the dental profession has been denied the privilege of reading outstanding contributions because they were published in journals not usually read by dentists. Oral surgery was the first specialty to be developed in dentistry. One of the great needs of that specialty was met in the action taken by the House of Delegates at St. Louis in approving the recommendation of the Board of Trustees for the publication of a journal of oral surgery. The recommenda tion of the Board of Trustees was made only after careful consideration of a study that had been made by a special committee ap pointed to determine the desirability of and need for such a journal. A committee of the American Society of Oral Surgeons and Exodontists, which had

been studying this problem for eight years, cooperated in its survey with the Chalmers J. Lyons Club of Michigah and with repre sentatives of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. In 1937, a special committee of the Amer ican Dental Association, under the chair manship of J. Orton Goodsell, of Saginaw, Mich., submitted a report to the Board of Trustees showing the need for and the pos sibilities inherent in the publication of such a journal by the Association. This report also contained a survey of the membership in two states, which revealed that many dentists were interested in the project and would be come subscribers to a journal of oral surgery if one were issued by the American Dental Association. In 1942, questionnaires were sent to the ■ entire membership of the American Dental Association. Subscription pledge cards were attached and the response was more than sufficient to assure the publication of a jour nal devoted exclusively to oral surgery that would be self supporting. The New York Institute of Clinical Oral Pathology was at that time publishing the Archives of Clinical Oral Pathology. Upon learning of the contemplated journal to be published by the American Dental Associa tion, the institute offered to supply material to the new publication and discontinue the Archives. Theodor Blum, editor of the Ar chives, is now a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Oral Surgery. T he Journal of Oral Surgery will be pub lished quarterly, but will be developed into a monthly publication as soon as there is the expected increase in subscriptions. No advertising will be included in the first is sues and, if possible, that policy will be con tinued. The first issue will have ninety-six pages, with format and style in keeping with T he

Pierce Anthony will head the staff of the new journal as editor in chief. Carl W. Waldron, of Minneapolis, will be editor. Members of the editorial board are: Theo dor Blum, New York; James R. Cameron, Philadelphia; J. Orton Goodsell, Saginaw, Mich.; V . H. Kazanjian, Boston; Howard C. Miller, Chicago, and Douglas B. Parker, New York. A formal announcement, regarding the new journal, with complete details, will be published in the January i issue of T h e Journal
