oster Wheeler’s Thailand operation will perform the engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) for a new 390 000 tons per annum propylene oxide (PO) facility at Banchang, near Map Ta Phut in Thailand and for the Power, Utilities and Infrastructure (PUI) Project, which will serve the new chemical facility. Foster Wheeler has already completed the front-end design for the PUI Project and has the contract for overall services support. The PO plant is expected to come online in 2011. PO is a chemical intermediate used in the production of raw materials for a wide range of industrial and commercial products, including polyurethanes, propylene glycol, and glycol ethers.

Alstom’s advanced amines technology. The pilot will be jointly operated by Alstom and Elektrownia Belchatow and is expected to be in operation by mid 2011. During the second phase, Alstom and PGE plan to build a larger CCS project to capture CO2 produced by the new 858 MW lignite-fired unit currently being built by Alstom for Elektrownia Bełchatów. This CCS plant will be in operation by 2015.

luor Corp has secured a contract for the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of Brazos Electric Power Cooperative’s Jack County Generating Facility Unit 2 power plant located near Bridgeport, Texas. The new 620 MW gas-fired, combined cycle expansion will provide reliable electricity with low emissions to serve growing demand required by Brazos Electric’s member utilities. Project completion is targeted for the second quarter of 2011. Fluor was previously the contractor for Brazos Electric Power Cooperative’s Jack County Generating Facility Unit 1 power plant. A similar design will be used for the new Unit 2 generating facility in order to shorten the schedule and to minimize plant operating costs. Brazos Electric issued Fluor a limited notice to proceed in June 2008 to begin preliminary engineering and procurement of the new unit. Fluor’s Irvine, California operations centre will execute the project.

Alstom, PGE Elektrownia Belchatow to develop CCS Essent and Shell study technology in Poland low-CO2 power plant

A

lstom and PGE Elektrownia Belchatow SA have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the development and implementation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology at the Belchatow power plant in Poland. In a first phase, Alstom will design and construct a pilot carbon capture plant at the existing unit 12 of the Belchatow power plant, which would capture approximately 100 000 tonnes per year of CO2 using 4

mass would be gasified to produce synthesis gas which in turn is used to make hydrogen. The hydrogen would then be used to generate electricity in turbines. The study will assess which depleted oil and gas fields would be suitable for CO2 storage. Because of the volume of CO2 involved, the study will consider both onshore and offshore fields. The companies are evaluating possible sites for the plant in the south-west part of the Netherlands.

ssent Business Development BV and Shell Gas & Power Developments BV are to study the feasibility of a 1000 MW, low-CO2 power plant in the Netherlands. Most of the CO2 produced by the plant would be captured and stored underground. Shell and Essent will evaluate the feasibility of combining a high-efficiency gasifier, a power generation plant and equipment to capture and store CO2. Coal and solid bio-

estinghouse Electric Co has established Westinghouse Electric Co UK, a Preston-based organization that will consolidate efforts to pursue commercial nuclear power business throughout the UK. Westinghouse believes that a fleet of its AP1000 reactors deployed in the UK could contribute as much as £30 billion to the UK economy. About half of this value would arise during construction of the fleet of plants, with the rest being delivered over the full 60-80 year period of operation. “Westinghouse will be pursing new plant business in scores of countries throughout the world,” said Mike Tynan, vice president, UK Growth Team and chief executive of Westinghouse UK. “As the UK market is more imminent than many, it is highly likely that Westinghouse would make use of British companies participating with Westinghouse in the UK to serve other more intermediate- and long-term new plant markets where infrastructure does not exist.”
