MARKET PROSPECTS

expected to go onstream in the last quarter of 2003. Air Liquide’s intention is then to add a carbon monoxide production unit to meet BASF’s future requirements, and those of other customers in the Antwerp area, starting in the year 2005. The new facility will be the largest Air Liquide hydrogen production unit in the world.

B&W WINS US$105 MILLION CONSTRUCTION PROJECT Babcock & Wilcox Construction Co Inc has been awarded a contract to erect nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction equipment at two power stations in the Midwestern US. The contract, valued at more than US$105 million, calls for the mechanical installation of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems at Kyger Creek and Clifty Creek power plants. The work includes installation of structural steel; reinforcement of structural steel, flues, SCR reactor, catalyst, ammonia piping, process piping and service piping; precipitator stiffening and revisions to induced draft fans.

UHDE AWARDED HUNGARIAN PLANT CONTRACT The Hungarian chemical company BorsodChem Rt has awarded Uhde, in preference to international competitors, a contract for a new oxychlorination plant as the first stage in the expansion of its production capacity for vinyl chloride (VCM) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The new plant, with a capacity of 225 000 tonnes per year of ethylene dichloride will be built at Kazincbarcika, 150 km northeast of Budapest.

The contract includes the basic and detail engineering, supply of equipment, technical support during the construction and erection phases, training of the operating personnel, and assistance during the commissioning phase. Uhde will also supply the oxychlorination reactor, one of the world’s biggest, for this plant. The plant is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2004.

ALUMINIUM ALCOA CONTINUES TALKS ON ICELAND PLANT Alcoa Inc and the Invest in Iceland Agency have signed an extension of their joint action plan to explore the possibility of constructing a state-of-theart aluminium production plant in Eastern Iceland. In the project under review, Alcoa would own and operate a 320 000-metric-ton-per-year aluminium plant, which would receive power from a 500+ MW hydroelectric power station in Eastern Iceland. That power station would be constructed and operated by Landsvirkjun, the national power company of Iceland.

PETROCHEMICALS NEW CONTRACT AWARD FOR SYNGAS PLANT IN CHINA Technip-Coflexip has been awarded a contract by the BASF-YPC joint venture for a syngas plant to be located in Nanjing, China. The investment is valued at about 60 million. The syngas plant will produce oxo-syngas, carbon monoxide and hydro-

gen, with steam as by-product. The products from the syngas plant will be used as feedstocks for various downstream consumers in the complex. The work will be carried out by Technip-Coflexip’s engineering centres in the Netherlands and China. The syngas plant will be ready for production in November 2004. B&W is teaming with American Electric Power, Babcock Borsig Power and Siemens Westinghouse for these SCR projects. The team is responsible for the engineering, design, procurement, installation, checkout and startup for all work associated with the SCR retrofits. SCRs will be installed on all five units at Kyger Creek, and five of the six units at Clifty Creek. For each unit, the outage schedule varies from seven to nine weeks. Work is scheduled to be completed by mid-July 2003.

PULP & PAPER KVAERNER SECURES 30 MILLION IN CONTRACTS Kvaerner’s Pulp & Paper business area has recently secured contracts to supply boilers, boiler rebuilds and air pollution control systems in Europe, primarily Scandinavia, worth a combined total of around 30 million. The Power Division is to supply two power boilers for Nynäshamn Värme AB’s power plant in Sweden, a subsidiary of Fortum Power & Heat AB. Kvaerner will supply a 24 MWth power boiler, using bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) technology, which will burn biomass, and an oil-fired boiler with a thermal capacity of 11 MW. Nynäshamn Värme is modernizing its power plant to meet environmental requirements, first of all by reducing

the emissions of CO2 and NOx. The boilers will be ready for commissioning by the end of 2003. Birka Värme Stockholm AB has placed an order for the relocation and modernizing of the power plant’s 80 MW oilfired boiler to their Högdalenverket plant. The project will be completed in the autumn of 2002. The Power Division has also received several small orders for power boiler rebuilds and boiler service contracts in Sweden, together with a major boiler rebuild in Europe. The Chemetics Division has been awarded a contract to supply a 16 MW flu gas condensing scrubber with combustion air humidifier to Kotkan Energia Oy’s new 60 MW Hovinsaari power plant in Finland. The power plant will burn biomass and refuse-derived fuel and will also produce energy for a nearby chemical producer. The plant will be in production by the end of 2003.
