Veolia Water Technologies undertakes water audit for Thai paper products supplier

V

eolia Water Solutions & Technologies (Thailand) Ltd is to conduct a series of proprietary studies, including an in-house Water System Audit, Pulp & Paper (P&P) Industry Water Benchmark, Water Impact Index, and a True Cost of Water assessment for a paper products supplier in Thailand. The work is designed to support the client’s plan to achieve a 30% capacity expansion for its paper plant in Prachinburi. This is Veolia’s first partnership with the Thai company that operates 12 paper production plants throughout Southeast Asia. Conducted over a 12-week period, the paper plant assessment will feature a series of consecutive studies that starts with an in-depth water system audit. The results are then benchmarked against other regional and global pulp and paper companies’ scores using Veolia’s

July 2015

Pulp & Paper industry Water Benchmark. The water assessment also includes the Veolia Water Impact Index tool that measures the plant’s water footprint. Veolia’s True Cost of Water, a business intelligence methodology to monetise water risks, completes the audit. The Veolia water audit service allows manufacturers to reduce operational costs, achieve higher efficiency levels, and secure key operating licences for business sustainability.

POWER GENERATION

Black & Veatch to modernise Turkey’s oldest gas-fired power plant

B

lack & Veatch is to help upgrade Turkey’s first gas-fired power plant to become one of the world’s most efficient and modern combined cycle facilities. Lead contractor GAMA Power Systems Inc selected Black & Veatch to help replace turbines at the Hamitabat combined cycle power plant that have been in operation since the 1980s. Four combined cycle turbine (2-on-1) units will become two single shaft units. The replacement will increase power generation efficiency and simplify operations. Black & Veatch is providing overall detailed design engineering and technical procurement support during the design phase as well as potentially on-site engineering during the construction. The project is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2017.

Amec Foster Wheeler awarded Polish CFB CHP plant contract

F

ortum Zabrze SA has selected Amec Foster Wheeler to design, supply, construct and commission a new multi-fuel circulating fluidisedbed (CFB) steam generating combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Zabrze, in Southern Poland. The 220MW plant has a maximum production capacity of 145MW for heating and 75MW for electricity generation. Commercial operation is planned to start by the end of 2018, providing district heating

to 70 000 households. The new multi-fuel boiler will be powered mainly by refuse derived fuel (RDF) and coal but can also use biomass and a mixture of other materials. This is the second CFB project that Amec Foster Wheeler has supplied to Fortum in Poland.

Alstom technology to treat US utility’s wastewater

A

lstom has been awarded a contract by a Midwestern utility in the US to supply its Spray Dryer Evaporator (SDE) technology to treat Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization (WFGD) wastewater from two 850MW coalfired boilers. This will be the first commercial deployment of the technology. Alstom’s SDE technology uses a small slipstream of hot gas from fossil-fired boilers to evaporate wastewater such as that produced by WFGD systems. Dissolved and suspended solids in the wastewater are dried and collected by the existing downstream particulate collection device.

FCC Aqualia to manage 2 wastewater treatment plants in Mecca

F

CC Aqualia has secured a 3-year E20 million contract to operate and maintain the two largest wastewater treatment plants in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, in a consortium with local company Alkhorayef Water and Power Co. The wastewater treatment plants in Hadda and Arana treat an average water flow of 250 000 m3 and a have a maximum treatment capacity of 375 000 m3. Mecca has a stable population of 1.5 million people, growing considerably higher during visits by pilgrims. This creates significant variations in the water flow from the source to the treatment plants. This is the third contract that FCC Aqualia has secured since it opened a subsidiary in Riyadh in 2011.
