Polyester laminate for electric insulation A new polyester-film/polyester-fibre'tleece' laminate for electrical insulation applications is amongst the range of Pucaro insulation products for the electrical industry, now available from Presspanfabrik Chr Authenrieth. T h e polyester fibres are impregnated with a special heat-resistant resin enabling the laminate to be used for electrical insulation applications at temperatures over 130°C. T h e laminate is available in a range of thicknesses from 0.15 to 0"4 mm and can be supplied with either a rongh or smooth finish according to the end-use requirements. temperature stability) and polyester film, intended for slot insulation in electric motors. In addition, for layer, phase and separator instdation the company otfers a laminate of Nomex Type 411 and Mylar polyester film, as a particuhlrly ahsorbent, non-slip and flexible material. Both combinations are intended for use in insulation class F (155°C). A third is a laminate of Nomex and Kapton polyimide film for similar insulation applications in class H (180°C). Kapton is a material which maintains its good electrical and mechanical properties also under extreme temperature conditions. It has been used in applications atla temperature of 400°C. Among other products for the electrical industry made by Authenrieth and exhibited at Hanover was PucaroKreppisol, a laminate of polyester film and cr6pe paper. It is widely used for class B phase insulation. This produces a surface with an irregular crosssection, r'Tvr is impregnated into this matrix and sintered. This reinforced coating has the non-stick, low friction characteristics of PTVE while the metal reinforcement takes the load and reduces the rate of wear. T h e molybdenum reinforcement is intended for conditions requiring very high bonding strength and wear resistance. Typical applications include coatings for valves, mixing vessels, oven liners, cutting edges, textile drying cylinders and cream dispensing pumps. Plastics pipe performance Fulmer Research Institute l,td is studying for the Ministry of Defencc (Navy Department) the dimensional changes in plastics pipes carrying liquids at various pressures and temperature. A special rig has been buih consisting of a number of pipe loops through which various liquids are circulated. T h e rig is designed so that pipes of different materials, including reinforced samples, and joints of ~arions patterns may be tested simultaneously. Permali Ltd of Gloucester, UK, have moved further into the consumer market with a recent contract to mould chairs for Artemide (UK) Ltd. T h e chairs are hot press moulded from polyester sheet moulding compound developed by Artemide and Permali claim an exceptionally high standard of gloss finish and colour density. Research directors of plastics organizations of six countries met recently at the invitation of Professor M. Chatain, Directeur du Centre d'Etude des Matibres Plastiques in Paris. The 'Association de Directeurs de Centres Europeens de Plastiques' (ADICEP) which was formed is intended as a forum where members can put forward their points of view on matters of professional interest, exchange ideas and coordinate their future actions. T h e two-day meeting in Paris reviewed current programmes and major areas of study - - topics included process and design engineering, quality testing of materials and products, combustibility and disposal of plastics materials. It is proposed that the Association should meet once per year and the next meeting is scheduled to be held in the Spring of 1973--meanwhile further
Service testing of carbon fibre T h e first carbon-fibre composite components to be used in military service in the UK were the trim tabs fitted to the Royal Air Force Central Flying School Jet Provosts a year ago. They have now completed almost 1500 hours flying and have shown no adverse damage apart from some incurred during handling. A variety of repair techniques are being tested and research is being carried out on protective coatings for carbon-fibre-plastics composites. T h e six carhon fibre composites trim ~abs in service were manufactured by British Aircraft Corporation's Military Aircraft Division. Platable Noryl resin A new platable Noryl resin (PN-235) is now being marketed in Europe by General Electric Plastics. T h e snccess of Noryl PN-235 as a plating substrate is attributed to a combination of properties - - good dimensional stability, a heat deflection temperature of 112.7°C (135°C when plated) and a coefficient of thermal expansion of 63X10-". Moulding conditions for this new grade are similar to those for other Noryl resins. Also the plating process is virtually identical to that used for ABS.
