Molecular fluorocarbon spray-paint A p p l y i n g a t h i n c o a t i n g of p o l y t e t r a f l u o r o e t h y l e n e (PTFE) - w h i c h is effectively -(CF2)n- w h e r e n is a very large n u m b e r - - to a s u r f a c e is difficult. The m a t e r i a l b e h a v e s l e s s llke a t h e r m o p l a s t i c a n d m o r e llke a m e t a l powder; c o m p r e s s i o n m o u l d i n g followed b y h e a t t r e a t m e n t is n o t u n u s u a l when engineering components are b e i n g m a n u f a c t u r e d . If it were p o s s i b l e to a p p l y i n d i v i d u a l -CF2u n i t s to t h e s u r f a c e i n q u e s t i o n , in a controlled m a n n e r , then a m o n o l a y e r or b i l a y e r of PTFE could be generated with c o n s e q u e n t l y h i g h flux rates. This invention proposes that p e r f l u o r o c y c l o h e x a n e , C6F12, is t h e s o u r c e , via p l a s m a i r r a d i a t i o n , of-(CF2}n- f r a g m e n t s w h i c h t h e n a d h e r e to t h e c h o s e n s u r f a c e a n d r e a c t to give a PTFE coating. A c y c l o p e r f i u o r o a l k a n e is p r e f e r r e d to a l i n e a r c o m p o u n d b e c a u s e , w h e n it is f r a g m e n t e d i n a p l a s m a g e n e r a t o r , n o CF3 radicals can be produced, only CF2 f r a g m e n t s . T h i s is e s s e n t i a l if a c o n t i n u o u s -(CF2)n- c o a t i n g is w a n t e d : t h e p r e s e n c e of large n u m b e r s of -CF3 r a d i c a l s w h i c h w o u l d t e r m i n a t e c h a i n s is undesirable. A t r e a t m e n t t i m e of 2 m i n u t e s i n a c h a m b e r e v a c u a t e d to 0 . 0 5 tort a n d u s i n g 5 W p l a s m a power, e i t h e r a t a voltage of 3 0 0 0 - 4 0 0 0 0 V or a t a f r e q u e n c y of 10 MHz or 13.56 MHz, gives a u s e f u l p r o d u c t . The s u b s t r a t e c a n i n c l u d e m i c r o p o r o u s PTFE film. The p a t e n t a p p l i c a t i o n w a s supported by the British Technology Group.
containing cyclodextrin residues, is u s e f u l for s u r f a c e m o d i f i c a t i o n a n d p r o t e c t i o n . It is f o r m e d b y floating a layer of p o l y m e r of f o r m u l a II o n t h e s u r f a c e of a n a q u e o u s c y c l o d e x t r i n s o l u t i o n so t h a t a derivative of f o r m u l a I is produced. Rf i n p o l y m e r II is a Cs--C15 p e r f l u o r o a l k y l group; k i n f o r m u l a I, i n d i c a t i n g t h e n u m b e r of d i s a c c h a r i d e u n i t s , is 5 - 8 . The m e m b r a n e is i n t h e f o r m of a L a n g m u i r - B l o d g e t t film. The c y c l o d e x t r i n c o n f e r s t h e a b i l i t y to form c l a t h r a t e i n c l u s i o n c o m p o u n d s with appropriately sized or s h a p e d m o l e c u l e s .
