IN BRIEF • Robbins & Myers is in preliminary discussions with other parties that could lead to the disposal of much of its Romaco business unit within the Pharmaceutical segment. • Denmark’s Hong Kongborn Princess Alexandra recently visited Grundfos’s factory in Souzhou near Shanghai, China. • Pentair Water - Kansas City Operations have delivered one million work hours of no injury lost time for the second time in four years. “Achieving this goal in 2001 and again in 2005 demonstrates the commitment to safety of all the personnel at our Kansas City Operations, which manufactures pumps for the Fairbanks Morse, Layne/Verti-Line and TwinPumps brands,” said Bill Waltz, president and general manager, Pentair Pump Group. “We are very proud of their accomplishment, and of the example they set for the manufacturing industry and our Pentair affiliates,” he continued. • Armstrong, the fluid flow equipment supplier, has appointed Northrich Co as Commercial Design/Build Representative for Northern Ohio. Northrich is focused on building the Armstrong brand throughout its territory, especially in the day-today HVAC business and with package pumping systems. • Ceetak Engineering Ltd will soon open two new facilities - one in Cork, Ireland and the other in Cwmbran, South Wales. • Leybold Vacuum is cutting 220 jobs in a restructuring programme designed to drive up profitability and strengthen the company’s competitive position. The German company currently has 1483 employees.

FLYGT TAKES OVER ALLWEILER DISTRIBUTION IN AUSTRALIA

PENTAIR RECOGNIZED FOR HIGH ETHICAL STANDARDS

ITT Flygt has taken over the distribution of Allweiler’s progressing cavity pumps, peristaltic pumps, rotary lobe pumps, and macerators in the Australian market effective 1 January 2005. The Swedish pump manufacturer is already selling Allweiler AG wastewater pumps under a private label in a number of non-European countries. Australia’s ITT Flygt Ltd will target primarily the mining and mineral processing industries with progressing cavity and peristaltic pumps sold under the Allweiler label. ITT Flygt also distributes Allweiler progressing cavity pumps under a private label to the Australian wastewater industry. By taking their partnership to a new level, the German pump specialist is expanding what has proven to be a successful sales model. In countries where it has a rather weak presence in certain market segments, Allweiler will benefit from ITT Flygt’s high profile and market presence to distribute its products. ITT Flygt also benefits from having an expanded product line. Allweiler AG is not new to the Australian market. Pump Power Australia has focused on promoting Allweiler centrifugal and screw pumps for some time and this partnership will continue. “Allweiler AG is now represented in Australia by two strong partners. This new sales channel gives us an opportunity to sell about another 500 pumps each year,” according to Allweiler board speaker Klaus Stahlmann.

Pentair has received the 2005 Minnesota Business Ethics Award (MBEA). The company was honoured for its commitment to ethical business dealings, as reflected in its Code of Business Conduct and Ethics, and for its passion to sustaining an ethical culture. The award, established by The Center for Ethical Business Cultures and the Minnesota Chapters of the Society of Financial Service Professionals, recognizes Minnesota companies that exemplify and promote ethical conduct for the benefit of the workplace, the marketplace, the environment and the community. “Pentair employees deserve the recognition that comes with this award,” said CEO Randall Hogan. “Our culture is rooted in our employees’ commitment to integrity, and this commitment guides our business.” Pentair was cited by the MBEA judges for its “ethical compass,” as embodied in the Code of Conduct. The company’s founder, Murray Harpole, was cited for his foresight in creating the original document, on which the current one is based. “While the times have changed, the values embodied in Pentair’s Code have not,” said Hogan. “These values attract employees and are a vital part of our company’s success,” he added.

GE LAUNCHES ‘ECOMAGINATION’ INITIATIVE US-based General Electric Co has launched an initiative to aggressively bring to market new technologies that will help customers meet pressing environmental challenges.

Referred to as ‘ecomagination’, GE says that the initiative represents its commitment to address challenges such as the need for cleaner, more efficient sources of energy, reduced emissions (greenhouse gas emissions) and abundant sources of clean water. “Ecomagination is about the future,” said Jeff Immelt, the company’s chairman and chief executive officer. “We will focus our energy, technology, manufacturing and infrastructure capabilities to develop tomorrow’s solutions such as solar energy, hybrid locomotives, fuel cells, lower-emission aircraft engines, lighter and stronger materials, efficient lighting and water purification technology.” Immelt says that GE will establish partnerships with its customers to tackle their most pressing environmental challenges, and double its research spending to develop the products and services they need. Furthermore, the company will also use these technologies to improve its own energy efficiency and environmental performance. Jonathan Lash, president of the World Resources Institute, based in Washington, USA, said: “This is a hugely important step by one of the world’s most important companies. It is particularly encouraging that GE is focusing its research on cleaner technologies and making a serious, meaningful and accountable commitment to achieve stabilization of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.” GE has initially identified 17 products that meet its ‘ecomagination’ criteria. It says these must significantly and measurably improve customers’ environmental and operating performance. GreenOrder, an environmental consulting firm, has provided independent, quantitative environmental analysis of the products and verified what they aim to achieve.
