REPORT FROM THE STS BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Forty-Sixth Annual Meeting, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons
T
MISCELLANEOUS
he Forty-Sixth Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons was held at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on January 25–27, 2010, with an attendance of more than 4,000, which included surgeons, allied health care professionals, spouses, and exhibitors. Attendees of the Annual Meeting had the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational sessions, including the Parallel Surgical Forums, Ticketed Breakfast Sessions, Surgical Video Matinees, and STS University. The Monday morning General Scientific Session featured three J. Maxwell Chamberlain Memorial Papers, the most highly rated papers of the Annual Meeting, which were selected for their appeal to each subspecialty: Congenital Heart Surgery—“Deep Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest (DHCA) Is Not a Risk Factor for Impaired Neurodevelopmental Outcome in School-Age Children Following Infant Cardiac Surgery”; General Thoracic Surgery—“Predictors of Mortality and Major Morbidity After Resection for Lung Cancer: A Society of Thoracic Surgeons General Thoracic Surgery Database Risk Model”; and Adult Cardiac Surgery—“Utilization and Outcomes of Less Invasive Mitral Valve Operations in North America.” Of particular note were four highly motivational presentations: the Presidential Address, the Thomas B. Ferguson Lecture, the Lillehei Lecture, and the Ethics Debate. In his Presidential Address, “Though Medicine Can Be Learned, It Cannot Be Taught”—The First 100 Years: Flexnerian Competency 2010,” Dr Gordon F. Murray spoke about the future of patient-centered care within the field of cardiothoracic surgery. Using the Flexner Report, which was published in 1910, as his platform, Dr Murray reinforced the idea that “the engagement of residents in the day-to-day care of patients is the essential context for the experiential learning of medicine and surgery.” The Thomas B. Ferguson lecture was given by Jeffrey B. Rich, MD. Dr Rich’s lecture focused on health care reform and how it is important for cardiothoracic surgeons to anticipate the expected effects on their practices. Dr Rich educated the audience on anticipated changes in the health care payment and delivery system that will ultimately motivate physicians and hospitals to deliver high-quality, efficient health care. The C. Walton Lillehei Lecture was presented by William A. Neal, MD. Dr Neal’s presentation, “The Minnesota Metastasis: Translational Research Before It Had a Name,” examined translational research, research that ultimately has an impact on public health, and discussed examples from his own work during the past 12 years, focusing on preventive cardiology and epidemiology.

The Ethics Debate, “The Financial Link Between Industry and Physician Consultants Should Be Severed— Pro/Con,” explored whether payments from industry to physicians have a corrupting influence on physicians’ clinical judgment and practices. In addition to these presentations, the Workforce on Patient Safety offered another important patient safety parallel session, and the Workforce on Annual Meeting introduced a new parallel session on critical care. The Workforce on Practice Management presented a four-hour STS Practice Management Summit. Wrapping up the STS 46th Annual Meeting was STS University; there were more than 900 registrations for 12 sessions. This year’s sessions ranged from a hands-on course on thoracoscopic lobectomy to a course on simulation in cardiothoracic surgery. STS University provided an opportunity for registrants to learn the latest techniques of cardiothoracic surgery through hands-on procedural education taught by world-renowned instructors. The STS is pleased to announce STS 46th Annual Meeting Online—a new educational product that affords physicians and nonphysicians the opportunity to earn CME credit at home or in the office. STS 46th Annual Meeting Online comprises the majority of sessions from the live conference, including the surgical symposia, general sessions, parallel surgical forums, surgical motion pictures, and the Ethics Debate. This activity will be available for CME credit until February 1, 2011. For more information or to register for STS 46th Annual Meeting Online, please visit www.sts.org. The success of the Annual Meeting was due in large part to the exemplary commitment of the Workforce on Annual Meeting under the leadership of David R. Jones, MD (Workforce Chair), John S. Ikonomidis, MD (STS University Task Force Co-Chair), Bryan F. Meyers, MD (STS University Task Force Co-Chair), Kemp H. Kernstine, MD (Surgical Symposium Task Force Co-Chair), Mark D. Plunkett, MD (Surgical Symposium Task Force Co-Chair), Thomas A. D’Amico, MD (Tech-Con Task Force Co-Chair), and Thomas A. Vassiliades, MD (Tech-Con Task Force Co-Chair). Before the STS 46th Annual Meeting, STS/AATS TechCon 2010 welcomed more than 1,000 attendees. The Tech-Con Task Force did an excellent job putting together a program that encompassed new technologies and emerging trends. The cardiac and thoracic tracks covered recent advances in less invasive aortic valve replacement, the artificial lung, and robotic mitral valve repair. These tracks included presentations on novel therapies for hybrid coronary revascularization, less invasive valve procedures, new techniques and technology, and the latest cell therapy for the heart. The following officers were elected at the annual Business Meeting: Douglas J. Mathisen, President; Michael J. Mack, First Vice President; Jeffery B. Rich, Second Vice President; and David A. Fullerton, Secretary. Carolyn E. Reed was reelected as Treasurer, and L. Henry Edmunds, Jr, was reelected as Editor of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery. Walter H. Merrill was elected as a Director-atLarge, and Richard J. Shemin was reelected as a Director-at-Large. Complete rosters of the STS Board of Directors, Standing Committees, Council Operating Boards, Workforces, Annual Meeting Task Forces, and The Annals Editorial Board follow this report. The Society extends its appreciation to retiring STS officers, Committee members, and Workforce members for their dedicated service. The STS membership elected 134 Active, 83 International, 65 Candidate, and 35 Associate Members this year. The Society now has more than 5,900 members.

The membership also voted to create a Pre-Candidate category for medical students and general surgery residents. Along with the new membership category, the STS also created a rolling admission process for PreCandidate, Candidate, and Associate membership categories. This new process allows completed applications for these three membership categories to be acted upon throughout the year. The STS would like to thank the many member volunteers and their supportive families for their commitment to the specialty, as well as for the hard work and long hours they put into developing and implementing this highly successful meeting. The STS 47th Annual Meeting will be held January 31–February 2, 2011. David A. Fullerton, Secretary
