Twenty-ninth Annual Meeting The Societv of Thoracic Surgeons J
The Twenty-ninth Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons was held at the San Antonio Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas, on January 25-27, 1993, with an attendance of 3,017 registrants, including spouses and exhibitors. The Scientific Sessions were attended by 894 members, 98 Candidate members, and 562 guests, including 211 residents, for a total of 1,554 physician attendees. There were 925 registrants present at the Twenty-sixth Annual Postgraduate Course. At the Postgraduate luncheon, Floyd D. Loop spoke on “Doing Better or Feeling Worse-The Politics of American Health.” Co-Chairmen Jeffrey M. Dunn and James K. Kirklin and the members of the Committee on Postgraduate Education are to be commended for putting together an excellent program, which produced the highest Postgraduate attendance in the history of The Society. Breakfast Sessions were held on two mornings. Attendance at each was limited to ensure informality and encourage member participation. The first Breakfast Session was devoted to case presentations of difficult problems and the second to small clinical workshops on selected topics. Also continued this year were the wellreceived “How I Do It” technical sessions. The J. Maxwell Chamberlain Memorial Paper, “Preoperative Chemotherapy for Stage IIIa (N2) Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Experience With 136 Patients,” was presented by Nael Martini and was co-authored by Mark M. Kris, Betty J. Flehinger, Richard J. Gralla, Katherine M. Pisters, Manjit S. Bains, Michael E. Burt, Patricia M. McCormack, Valerie W. Rusch, and Robert J. Ginsberg. New this year were Poster Presentations. These presentations were both popular and instructive. The success of these sessions and the scientific program was due chiefly to the substantial effort of the Program Committee under the vigorous leadership of Adnan Cobanoglu, Timothy J. Gardner, and Thomas W. Shields.
