On Poison Prevention Packaging
Free Consumer Information Kit Available to Pharmacists
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the government agency responsible for administering the Poison Prevention Packaging Act of 1970, has announced a new consumer information program that will be administered in part through the nation's pharmacies. The program is designed to inform older consumers and those suffering from handicaps that conventional packaging is available to them if they are unable to cope with child-resistant packaging. In a survey of its membership last year, the APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice found that many of the problems related to the use of child-resistant packages occur in these two groups of patients (JAPhA, NS15, 502-505, 1975). Moreover, it was the opinion of pharmacists surveyed that a significant number of patients are unaware of their option to request noncomplying packaging, a right granted to patients and prescribers by Congress in the 1970 legislation. (For related letter on this subject, see page 170) APhA is cooperating with the Consumer Product Safety Commission in making available to pharmacists a kit to assist them in educating patients regarding their right to obtain conventional packaging if required. The CPSC-produced "Pharmacy Information Kit" contains a poster, a counter card, two pamphlets entitled "Poison
Prevention Packaging: What Pharmacists Should Know," and 50 pamphlets entitled "Poison Prevention Packaging: Alternatives for Older Consumers and the Handicapped."
You may obtain a kit without charge by requesting a "Pharmacist Information Kit" at the following address-"Non-Complying Packaging," U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Washington, DC 20207.
