From Eastern Missouri to West Texas UDDENLY 5 years have passed and the American Journal of Kidney Diseases editorial office is moving again, this time from St Louis, MO, to Lubbock, TX. It seems only a few months ago that the Journal moved from Cincinnati to St Louis. However, with change comes freshness, and it is time for the Journal to undergo the renewal that comes with different leadership. St Louis is known as the "gateway to the West," and next month that gateway opens to allow the transfer of the Editor-in-Chief's responsibilities to Dr Neil Kurtzman of Texas Tech University. I wish him well in his new endeavor, and I am sure that under his leadership the Journal will continue to flourish and grow. The direction and nature of contributions to nephrology of the Journal were established by the first Editor, Dr George Porter, and maintained by Dr Robert G. Luke at Birmingham and Cincinnati. I have attempted to follow that inspiring lead, and am confident that Dr Kurtzman will continue the tradition of striving to make the Journal "indispensable reading for all physicians who care for patients with kidney disease, of relevance to all students and scientists interested in renal pathophysiology, and attractive as a publication medium for those who labor to establish clinical truths and improve patient care." During my tenure as Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases the circulation increased substantially and the number of submitted manuscripts doubled. My thanks to our readers, our contributors, and particularly to our

reviewers for making this publication the special journal that it is today. I have enjoyed immensely working with the Assistant Editors, initially Drs Kevin Martin and George Schreiner, and later Dr James (Jay) Delmez. I would not have been able to edit the Journal without their support, dedication to excellence, and wise counsel. Also of invaluable assistance were the Associate Editors: Drs William G. Couser, M. Roy First, Raymond Hakim, Michael Kashgarian, Adrian I. Katz, Bryan D. Myers, Giuseppe Remuzzi, and Norman J. Siegel. I acknowledge wholeheartedly the contribution of these individuals and members of the Editorial Board; they made my job so much easier. Patricia Verplancke-Morrissey, Editorial Assistant, did an exemplary job of directing the editorial headquarters of the Journal in St Louis. Personally and on behalf of the Assistant and Associate Editors, I express profound gratitude to her for managing the office so deftly during the 5 years of my tenure as Editor-in-Chief. The National Kidney Foundation, under whose auspices the Journal is published, permitted me independence in managing the content and appearance of the publication according to my best judgment. This expression of confidence was welcome and invigorating. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the support, efficiency, and professionalism of the staff at W.B. Saunders, the publisher of the Journal. It was a pleasure to interact with Joan Blumberg and her staff in Philadelphia. SauIo Klahr, MD
