Mini bovine embryo freezer
A plug-in electronically controlled economizer, Powersaver, designed to cut freezer running costs by up to 20°0 has been launched by B & R Electrical Products Limited, UK. The device is fully guaranteed and modestly priced, and its cost can be recovered quickly through reduced electricity bills. Controlled tests with typical supermarket chest freezers showed that this device can recoup initial costs very quickly, within 6 to 12 months, depending on freezer type and usage. Effective also with commercial refrigerators, ice makers, slush machines, wine coolers and airconditioning units, Powersaver prolongs the life of the appliance by making the compressor unit run more smoothly and cooler at maximum efficiency. Smoother, cooler running prevents harmful vibration and potentially damaging heat build up. Compactly designed, maintenance-free and performance-tested, this economizer is simply plugged into a supply socket and the appliance can then be plugged in directly to Powersaver. Rated at 240 V, 50 Hz and suitable for all standard types of freezer/refrigeration motor (0.7 3 A running current), the economizer protects itself against overcurrent.
An ultra-compact controlled rate bovine embryo freezer is now available from the Biomedical Division of Planer Products Ltd. Model R206 weighs only 15 kg and can be easily carried from laboratory to farm. The freezer used miniaturized microprocessor electronics to control the cryopreservation process precisely, thus optimizing embryo viability. However, no expertise in programming is required. The freezer is pre-set to run a program which controls optimal bovine embryo freezing. For specialist applications a specially modified program, which simply plugs in ready for use, can be supplied on request. The freezer reservoir serves two functions, storing the liquid nitrogen and acting as a reservoir for the frozen embryos. The precisely controlled freezing process minimizes the amount of liquid nitrogen required (typically 3 dm 3 per embryo freeze). Up to 40 straws can be frozen, horizontally or vertically, or 10 ampoules: total unit size ~ 1 ft 3. Model R206 can be used with a conventional miniature chart recorder but as an alternative it can be obtained with an internal memory. Compressor motors in freezers and similar equipments are, of necessity, over-rated for normal working conditions. A large surge of current is needed at start-up to provide maximum torque but, as the running cycle proceeds and the load on the motor becomes stabilized, the need for power is gradually reduced to normal running current. The Powersaver delivers the necessary initial power required, then, by constantly monitoring the motor's precise requirements, quickly stabilizes the current consumption to a lower, optimum level. The Powersaver is the first of a series of economizer devices being introduced to the market. Several other types are under development for various applications, including single-phase and three-phase for larger air-conditioning systems.
