This German monograph addresses cardiologists working in both hospitals and private practice. Its objective is the presentation of cardiac function in various physiological and pathophysiological situations by using invasive and noninvasive diagnostic methods. A general section describes functional diagnostic examinations such as conventional radiology, echocardiography, catheterization, nuclear medical investigations, lactate diagnostics and long-term electrocardiography. These topics are discussed with regard to their historical development, the method itself, its indication and its possibilities of failure. Further sections address physiological and pathophysiological aspects and the application of functional tests in various conditions such as athlete’s heart and cardiac failure. Moreover, dynamic invasive and noninvasive methods of cardiac and coronary functional diagnosis are described and stressed by illustrations and tables of numerous personal clinical studies. Nevertheless, incomplete and partly incorrect legends do not contribute to good understanding.

Special sections that follow are concerned with cardiomyopathies, coronary arterial and valvar diseases. Pathophysiology, clinical presentation and functional diagnostic procedures are discussed. The authors’ outstanding clinical experience is underlined by impressive case reports and results of their clinical researches. Modem diagnostic methods (like cross-sectional echocardiography and Doppler sonography), however, are relatively underrepresented, whereas more traditional tests like cymograms are extensively discussed. Coloured Doppler mode examples, which would have been expected in a book appearing in 1988, are completely lacking and the method itself is described only briefly. From a formal point of view, varying structures of different chapters, abbreviations lacking international standards and unusual terminologies prevent pleasant reading. In summary, this monograph offers a good review of cardiac functional diagnosis for the senior cardiologist, who is able to weigh up its abundance of information. It is less recommended to those who attach importance to a clear and concise presentation of common cardiac functional tests and their clinical application.
