Saipem wins US$1.1bn in new E&C offshore contracts

S

aipem has secured new engineering and construction (E&C) offshore contracts worth US$1.1 billion in Brazil, Angola and the Caspian Sea. In Brazil, Saipem has been assigned an EPIC contract by Petrobras for the Sapinhoá Norte and Cernambi Sul projects in the Santos Basin. The work includes the engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation and pre-commissioning of the SLWR (Steel Lazy Wave Riser) for the collection system at the Sapinhoá Norte field, and the FSHR (Free Standing Hybrid Risers) for the gas export systems at the Sapinhoá Norte and Cernambi Sul fields. Saipem has also secured an EPIC contract from Total E&P Angola for the GirRI (Girassol Resources Initiatives) project covering the engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation and commissioning of topside modifications for the multiphase pump systems on the Girassol and Dalia FPSOs. In the Russian sector of the Caspian Sea, Saipem has been awarded a LukoilNizhnevolzhskneft contract for T&I activities in the Vladimir Filanovsky field. This work involves the transportation and installation of several facilities including an ice-resistant fixed platform, a living quarter platform, a central processing platform and a riser platform, along with connection bridges.

CARBON CAPTURE

Fluor to build Shell’s Quest carbon capture facility in Canada

hell has selected Fluor Corp as its engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the Quest carbon capture facility at the Athabasca Oil Sands project in Alberta, Canada. The Quest project is being built on behalf of the Athabasca Oil Sands Project joint venture owners, including Shell, Chevron and Marathon Oil, with support from the Canadian and Alberta governments. 4

The Athabasca Oil Sands Project produces bitumen, which is piped to Shell’s Scotford Upgrader. Fluor will provide full EPC services using its patent-pending 3rd Gen Modular Execution approach for a 1.1 million tonne-per-year carbon capture facility at the Scotford Upgrader near Edmonton, Alberta. Captured carbon dioxide will be sent about 80 km from the facility via underground pipeline to an underground storage site. Fluor has been providing preliminary services and front-end engineering and design for Quest since 2009.

CHEMICALS &

a new neodymium polybutadiene (Nd-PBR) rubber plant being built on Jurong Island, Singapore. Foster Wheeler successfully completed the front-end engineering design for this project earlier this year. The new facility, which LANXESS expects to be the largest of its kind in the world, will be designed to produce 140 000 tonnes per annum of Nd-PBR and will include process and finishing buildings, a central control room, a substation and a tank farm. It will be built alongside LANXESS’s 100 000 tonnesper-year synthetic butyl rubber plant, the largest facility of its type in Asia, due to start up in 2013, and for which Foster Wheeler is also the EPCm contractor.

New petrochemical Technip undertakes complex underway FEED for new Dow ethylene plant in Texas in Mexico

he Dow Chemical Co has awarded Technip the front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract and cracking furnaces engineering and procurement services for a new ethylene production plant in Freeport, Texas. The new facility will be based on low-cost ethane feedstock. The products from the new plant will be used for Dow’s downstream facilities in the Gulf Coast in Texas and Louisiana. Texas Operations is Dow’s largest integrated manufacturing site worldwide and the largest single-company chemical complex in North America. Technip’s operating centre in Claremont, California, will execute this contract. The FEED activities are targeted for completion in mid-2013.

joint venture between Odebrecht, Technip and ICA Fluor will design and build the new Etileno XXI petrochemical complex in the Mexican state of Veracruz under a multi-billion dollar engineering, procurement and construction contract secured from Braskem Idesa. The new petrochemical complex will include a 1 million ton-per-year ethylene cracker and two high density polyethylene plants. The joint venture project team will use several operating centres around the world to execute the project.

Fluor secures Russian copper project aikal Mining Co has awarded Fluor Corp an initial contract for the definition phase of the Udokan copper deposit development project in Russia. Work has already started on the definition phase study, with feasibility study services expected to begin in early 2013. The work is being executed from Fluor’s Vancouver, Canada office with support from the Farnborough, UK and Moscow, Russia offices. The Udokan deposit, situated in the Kalarsky area of Russia’s Zabaikalye region, is one of the largest undeveloped copper deposits in the world.
