POWER GENERATION ABB STRENGTHENS SUDAN’S POWER GRID Power and automation technology group ABB has signed a contract worth US$16 million for a power transmission project which will strengthen Sudan’s power grid. The company won the order from the main contractor Harbin Power Engineering Co Ltd of China. The Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources Merowe Dam Project Implementation Unit of Sudan initiated the project. The Merowe hydroelectric power station, located about 400 km north of Khartoum, is connected to the national grid by 500kV, 220kV and 110kV overhead lines and associated sub-stations. ABB is responsible for designing, supplying and commissioning the complete secondary electrical system, on a turnkey basis, for seven new sub-stations.
EIB LENDS 80MN TO ESTI ENERGIA The European Investment Bank (EIB) is providing a 80 million loan to finance the renovation and extension of electricity transmission and distribution facilities in Estonia, which will be undertaken by Eesti Energia AS over the next three years. The investment will, among others, help to reduce operational and maintenance costs, accommodate the expected growth in electricity demand within the residential sector and, in an international context, support the company’s strategic objective of increasing
its presence in the electricity markets in neighbouring countries. Sandor Liive, member of the board and chief financial officer of Eesti Energia, says that the loan will help it to secure the sustainability of investments in national grid and distribution network.
VA TECH WINS JORDANIAN CONTRACT VA TECH Transmission & Distribution, the Austrian supplier of high voltage transmission and distribution systems, has been awarded a new contract valued at 23 million by the National Electric Power Co (NEPCO) of Jordan. The company will supply and install a 400kV gas insulated switchgear (GIS) sub-station in Samra, Jordan. The contract, which will be handled on a turnkey basis, includes six bays of 400kV GIS switchgear. Work starts immediately and the sub-station will be commissioned during July 2005. This contract means that the company will have supplied three out of the five NEPCO 400kV sub-stations, including both GIS units.
FW TO SUPPLY SCR SYSTEM In the USA, Foster Wheeler Ltd’s subsidiary Foster Wheeler North America Corp has been awarded a contract by American Electric Power to supply and install a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system at its Muskingum River Generating Station. The SCR is destined for Unit 5, a 600MW supercritical boiler, powered by pulverized coal, which is located in Beverly, Ohio. The contract covers engineering, materials
supply, construction, commissioning and testing. The system is scheduled to start operating during the second quarter of 2005. The SCR system will greatly improve air quality by reducing emissions of smogproducing nitrogen oxides (NOx), says Foster Wheeler.
