MINING CONTRACTS AWARDED FOR PERUVIAN SMELTER PLANT Southern Peru Copper Corp has selected Aker Kvaerner Canada Inc’s Chemetics divison and Kvaerner Perú SA to build the second sulphuric acid plant and effluent treatment plant at its copper smelter in Ilo, Peru. The US$59 million lump sum contract includes the complete design, supply, erection and commissioning of the plant. The project will be managed from Chemetics’ office in Vancouver, Canada, from where the company will also carry out the majority of the engineering.

OUTOKUMPU SOLVENT EXTRACTION PLANT FOR CHILE Under a contract worth more than 40 million, Outokumpu Technology will design and deliver a new world-class VSFTM solvent extraction plant for Minera Escondida Ltda for its sulfide leach project in Chile. Outokumpu Technology’s scope includes engineering, proprietary equipment and supplies, construction, erection, training, commissioning and start-up supervision services. The new plant will be located at the existing Minera Escondida’s mine site, approximately 160 km east of

Antofagasta in the II region of Chile. The plant will be operational in 2006. The new plant uses Outokumpu’s advanced vertical smooth flow technology and it will be the largest plant of its kind in the world. The feed solution throughput capacity is 9000 m3/h with only two solvent extraction lines. The plant will have an estimated production of 180 000 mtpy of cathode copper.

PULP & PAPER METSO TO DELIVER PAPERMAKING LINE TO SOUTH KOREA Metso Paper will supply a production line for fine paper to Hankuk Paper’s Onsan mill in South Korea, for start up at the end of 2005. This will be the third line supplied by Metso Paper to this mill. The delivery will include a complete paper making line PM 4 equipped with a machine control system supplied by Metso Automation. The line will have a capacity of 200 000 tons per year. After the start-up of the new production line in 2005, Hankuk Paper will have an annual capacity of 560 000 tons.

POWER GENERATION FW WINS CONTRACT FOR 400 MW POWER PLANT IN ITALY SET Srl has awarded Foster Wheeler Italiana SpA a lump-sum turnkey contract for the engineering, procurement, and construction of a 400 MW grassroots combined-cycle plant to be built at Teverola, Italy. The plant is a natural gasfired power station and will produce electricity for the Italian National Grid. The power island includes a multishaft arrangement consisting of a gas turbine, a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG), and a steam turbine, connected to an air-cooled condenser. Foster Wheeler Italiana will provide engineering, materials supply, erection, construction supervision, precommissioning, commissioning, start-up, and testing, up to commercial operation. Foster Wheeler Italiana’s Equipment Division will design and supply the HRSG. General Electric will supply the power package, which includes the gas turbine, the steam turbine, the associated generators, and auxiliary equipment. The plant should be fully operational by the end of 2006.

SCA IMPROVES EFFICIENCY AT ÖSTRAND PULP MILL

B&V AWARDED CONTRACTS FOR 2 CCPS IN CHINA

SCA is to install a new, energy efficient recovery boiler at its Östrand pulp mill in Timrå, Sweden in a SKr1.6 billion investment. The new boiler will facilitate an immediate increase in pulp production from 395 000 tons to 420 000 tons and will be operational in the autumn of 2006.

Black & Veatch Corp, in partnership with Hebei Electric Power Design and Research Institute, has been awarded contracts for the engineering design of two Chinese combined cycle power plants - the Shi Dongkou and Jinling Combined Cycle Generating Plants.

Once complete, the projects will generate 1050 MW each (3x350 MW), providing electricity to the rapidly developing cities of Shanghai and Nanjing. The majority owner of the projects, Huaneng Power International, plans to have the plant’s first units operating by mid-2006.

MHI RECEIVES FULL-TURNKEY ORDER FROM MEXICO Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (MHI) is to supply a 495 MW gas turbine combined-cycle power plant to Electricidad Sol de Tuxpan (EST) in Mexico. EST is a special-purpose company established for the Tuxpan V IPP project by Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp and Kyushu Electric Power Co. The Tuxpan plant is located along the Gulf of Mexico in Tuxpan, in the Mexican state of Veracruz. Four power-generating units are currently in operation at Tuxpan, three of which were built by MHI. The newly ordered 495 MW No 5 unit, targeted for start-up in September 2006, is to incorporate two M501F gas turbines, two heat recovery steam generators and one steam turbine.
