IN BRIEF Web service provides access to current information Henkel Loctite has introduced a new website service to provide customers with the latest information on the company products. Customers can access data sheets, product brochures, as well as information on application equipment and new developments. The service can be accessed at: www.loctite-users-choice.com/uk New service agreement reached with major chemical company Burgmann Industries GmbH has signed a global supplier agreement with The Dow Chemical Company. Under the terms of this agreement the Burgmann will supply and service standard and engineered mechanical seals for pumps and agitators to Dow production facilities. A quarter of UK seal companies are struggling The good news from the latest report from Plimsoll Publishing suggests that 75% of the seal companies in the UK are doing very well and showing excellent returns. Unfortunately the remaining 25% are not doing so well, and actually losing money. As usual, mention Sealing Technology to obtain a discount if you wish to purchase the report. Neoprene production to continue DuPont Performance Elastomers (DPE) has confirmed that the company is committed to neoprene polychloroprene production which will continue at its Pontchartrain facility in Louisiana, following the planned 2007 closure of the company’s polychloroprene plant in Louisville, Kentucky. DPE is investing $50 million in system upgrades at Pontchartrain to ensure continuity of supply. John Crane receives top supplier award John Crane has received a Top Supplier Award for 2005 from Goulds Pumps Inc, for the fourth year in succession. It is in recognition of excellent on-time delivery and quality performance as a supplier to the Seneca Falls, New York plant. Innovene and Klinger have a Scottish deal Following extensive negotiations Klinger Ltd and Innovene Manufacturing Scotland have agreed a deal between the two companies. The contract agreement will run from 1 May 2006 until 31 March 2009, with a further option of two years, subject to performance targets being achieved. In addition, Klinger UK has acquired Solent Gaskets, which will now become the Southampton branch of Klinger. Sealing technology course postponed The short course planned at Georgia Institute of Technology for November has been postponed until March 2007, for administrative reasons. The new dates and reservation details are in the Events Calendar on page 15.

applications. Approved valve packings include Supagraf Premier and Supagraf Control. Contact: James Walker Moorflex Ltd, John Escritt Road, Bingley, West Yorkshire BD16 2BS, UK. Tel: +44 1274 562211, Fax: + 44 1274 566623, Email: [email protected], Web: www.jameswalker.biz/moorflex

Vane pumps sealed for high pressures Precision parts supplied by Bauer Springs Ltd, are used in the manufacture of vane cell pumps that are specified within the European automotive industry. Applications can include common-rail injection pumps producing up to 1350 bar. The clearance tolerances of the vanes moving within the rotor slots present a great production challenge, which involves precision engineering covering evenness, parallelism, both angular and dimensional stability together with surface roughness, all

to be maintained within the micron range. The materials are typically high-speed and roller bearing grade steels. The vanes are loaded by a combination of centrifugal force and spring pressure to create a nocontact seal with the housing. Perfluorosilicone compounds unveiled The latest addition to range of compounds offered by Clwyd Compounders is a new family of perfluorosilicone compounds. These materials offer the benefit of low temperature flexibility down to –50°C together with good resistance to a range of difficult fluids including polar solvents, automotive fuel, amine oil additives and steam. Typical properties for a 70 hard compound are a tensile strength of 10 MPa and elongation of 270% with compression set of 19% after 24 hours at 200°C.

Editor’s comment: Following on from our feature in June, if we are beginning to see elastomers that can offer fluid resistance comparable with speciality fluorocarbons and the low temperature capabilities of silicone materials they should find a lot of applications.

Papers invited for STLE 2007 The Seals Technical Committee of the STLE is soliciting papers and presentations for the 2007 STLE Annual Meeting. The meeting will be held 6–10 May at the Philadelphia Marriott. All fluid sealing topics are welcome, including mechanical face seals, circumferential seals, lip seals, elastomer seals, clearance or contacting seals, applications, fundamentals, product development and research. Offers of papers can be made on the STLE website, with a deadline
