ECC sees ‘some improvement Some improvement in market conditions is reported by English China Clays (ECC), following a collapse in pre-tax profits in September and a five-year low in shares early in December. Chief executive Dennis Rediker said that the cash cost of a restructuring programme was coming out at much lower than expected and the group was on target to achieve planned cost-savings of 230 million and more. In addition, the main markets were showing signs of improvement, including paper, on which ECC counts for some 70% of its sales. “The combination of the reorganisation and better trading conditions has led the management to have more optimism”, said Radiker. Analysts have raised their forecast for 1997 profits from &55million to about f70million.
