GE to provide water reuse technology for Chinese coal-fired power plant
G
E is supplying wastewater treatment equipment, including membrane and brine concentration technologies, for the Jingneng Zhuozhou coal-fired power plant in Zhuozhou City, in Hebei Province, China. GE’s zero liquid discharge (ZLD) technology will help Hebei Zhuozhou Jingyuan Thermal Power Plant Co Ltd to meet Chinese emissions and discharge limitations for new thermal power plants and enable the reuse of 99% of the FGD blowdown wastewater at the plant. The power plant’s wastewater will be recycled and used as makeup water. The project is part of a plan for Hebei Zhuozhou Jingyuan Thermal Power Plant to relocate high-pollution plants out of Beijing’s urban areas. The new Jingneng Zhuozhou Power Plant will replace the existing Shijingshan Power Plant, which was decommissioned last year. The new plant, which is expected to enter commercial operation in May 2017, will be a demonstration ZLD power plant for China. Meanwhile, Federated Co-operatives Ltd’s Co-op Refinery Complex in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, is installing GE’s water recycling technology for a wastewater improvement project that will enable the refinery to clean 100% of its wastewater on-site. Once fully operational, the Co-op Refinery Complex will be the only refinery in North America to recycle all of its wastewater for steam production. The refinery’s current water source is a blend of well water and city water. Restrictions on water use mandated that the Co-op Refinery Complex had to find a new source of water. GE’s solution combines ZeeWeed membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology and a high-efficiency reverse osmosis (HERO) system to recycle and reuse 2 million gallons of wastewater per day. After commissioning, the refinery will reduce its use of freshwater by 28%.
H2O Innovation wins Clearlogx order

(BRPUA) in Granbury, Texas, USA. Clearlogx will control and optimise the coagulant dosing of a 13 MGD (49 210 m3/day) water treatment plant, which is a combination of a conventional and membrane filtration system using ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) technologies.
OriginClear’s PWT installs UF system at North Dakota power station
O
riginClear Inc’s subsidiary Progressive Water Treatment Inc (PWT) has completed the installation and successful launch of a twin 300 gallon per minute UF membrane system for Otter Tail Power Co at its Coyote Station in Beulah, North Dakota, USA. The collaboration with Omaha-based Consolidated Water Solutions features an UF membrane system that treats surface water before it enters the RO membrane system which supplies clean water to the steam generators.
Oasys Water expands in Asia with three new Chinese projects
O
asys Water is deploying three new industrial wastewater treatment projects in China and expanding its Asian operational infrastructure to support growth in the region. Oasys and its Chinese partner Beijing Woteer Water Technology Co Ltd are providing a ZLD (zero liquid discharge) water treatment plant for process effluent streams at Zhongtian Hechuang Energy Co Ltd’s US$3.1 billion coal-based methanol petrochemical plant which is under construction near Ordos, in China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Woteer will provide a ZLD water treatment system, featuring Oasys’s forward osmosis (FO) technology, to transform 3200 m3/ day of process wastewater at the coal-to-olefin CTO complex. This new deployment will use two of Oasys’s membrane brine concentrator (MBC) systems in parallel, to transform high salinity process wastewater into fresh water to be recycled in the plant’s production process. The huge ZLD water treatment system will include the MBC systems and polishing RO from Oasys along with pretreatment and crystallizer systems provided by Woteer. Oasys and Woteer are also in the final stag-
es of commissioning a ZLD project for the treatment of combined power plant wastewater streams of 1200 m3/day at the Yangmei Taihua CTO complex in Shanxi province. Woteer has recently secured a third project featuring Oasys FO-based MBC technology, for the treatment of flue gas desulfurization wastewater to ZLD at Shanxi Lujin Electric Power’s Wangqu Thermal Power Station in China’s Shanxi province. “The combination of our successful commissioning of the Changxing Power Plant last year and the continued acceleration of the Chinese ZLD market has driven Oasys to grow its presence in the region and expand the breadth of our activities with our Chinese partner, Woteer,” explained Jim Matheson, president and CEO of Oasys Water.
Acciona extends Dominican Republic’s water supply network
A
joint venture comprising Acciona’s Construction and Water divisions and local partners Inversiones y Construcciones del Caribe and Consorcio Solsanit has been awarded an €88 million contract to extend the Eastern Aqueduct of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. The Eastern Aqueduct currently contains two modules producing a total of 4m3/second, and the successful joint venture will create an additional module of 2m3/second. The water will be taken from the river Ozama and treated in the existing plant.
Veolia finalises work at Scottish distillery
V
eolia Water Technologies has successfully completed the £2.5million wastewater treatment plant for the £100 million Macallan Distillery and visitor centre in Craigellachie, Moray, Scotland. Macallan owners, Edrington, commissioned the new distillery to expand its production and meet increased demand for Macallan single malt whisky. The distillery needed an enhanced wastewater plant on site to meet the SEPA regulations for discharge into the environmentally sensitive River Spey. Veolia had already gained valuable experience while working on Macallan’s previous wastewater treatment plant and the company carried out a wastewater characterisation study prior to the design of the new plant.
