Minutes of the Fall Meeting of the Council of the Geochemical Society November 5, 1979, San Diego, California

President Epstein calLed the meeting to order at 7~55 P.M. 1.

The minutes of the Spring 1979 Geochemical Society Council meeting were adopted without change.

2.

OFFICERS' AND COMMITTEE REPORTS: A.

Treasurer's Report (D. Hewitt)

1.

Accepted as submitted.

2.

The question of expenses for AGI was deferred to the Spring 1980 meeting, at which time G. Tilton will report on past decisions and justifications for continuing to support AGI. (Taken verbatim from the May 1979 minutes).

B.

Secretary's Report (P. Buseck)

Accepted as submitted.

2.

For the period October 1, 1978 to September 30, 1979, the Geochemical Society received 84 new members, of which 31 affiliated with the Organic Geochemistry Division. Of the new members, 23 are from countries other than the U.S.: U.K. - 6, Canada - 4, Norway -4, and 1 or 2 from Brazil, France, Netherlands, Singapore, Japan and Germany.

3.

All authors of Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta articles who are not members of the Geochemical Society will receive application blanks with their accepted manuscripts.

Editor's Report (D. Shawl

1.

Associate editors: A.F. Truesdell has resigned effective October, 1979. E.R. Sholkovitz has been appointed in his stead to handle water/sedimentary geochemistry papers.

2.

Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta publication: During the year ending September 30, 1979, 300 papers have been processed, compared with 299 during the previous year. The distribution among sub-fields has also been remarkably similar during the two years.

Geochimica et Cosmoehimica Acta production: Production of Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta was transferred from Oxford to Exeter earlier this year and the journal is being handled in an efficient manner, Papers in recent issues have been published within the four month schedule. Four papers in the August issue appeared to be late: three were due to late return of authors' proofs.

5.

Geochimicaet Cosmochimica Acta indices: Pergamon Press are finalizing details with a typesetter/printer to produce a cumulative index for Volumes 31-40. The index to the Proceedinas of the Lunar Science Conference is published each year, together with the annual Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta index. Pergamon t New York, did not forward the necessary material to Pergamon, Oxford in time for its publication with the Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta index. The Lunar Science Conference index will appear shortly. Library subscription price was announced in the Pergamon Journals Catalogue for X+80/81 as $250 (up from $2081. This was subsequently changed to $275.

D.

Publications Committee Report (S. Epstein for R. Brett) The chairman of the publications committee is in contact with Pergamon Press in order to negotiate a new contract. A report to Council will be forthcoming shortly,

Nominations Committee Report

1.

Secretary: T. Takahashi was nominated to be the new Secretary. Buseck will remain as Secretary until the Fall, 1980 meeting.

Council: R. Berner and R. Brett have completed their terms and are being replaced by M. Tatsumoto and H. Taylor. In addition, 3. Doe was nominated to fill the term of C. Christ, who is ill.

F.

Organic Geochemistry Division Report (I. Kaplan).

1.

Synlpos ia : X full-day symposium on "Petroleum geochemistry and source rock potential of carbonate rocks" has been organized for the Fall 1980 GSA meeting. Council gave its full support for this symposium, President Broecker will arrange for its inclusion in the next GSA meeting.

2.

James Palacas has replaced Colin Barker as Division Chairman. Winters (AMOCO, Tulsa, OK) is the new chairman-elect).

3.

Treibs award: OGD presented its nominee fox the 1980 Treibs award and supporting background material will be distributed to Council shortly.

4.

Those OGD members who do not belong to GSA wish to be notified of forthcoming meetings and symposia. This will be handled in the future via the new Newsletter (see below).

1.

Letter of invitation was written to 140 prospective members.

2.

Membership application forms will be bound into future issues of Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta.

3.

A general perception remained that more should be done to increase membership.

GENERAL BUSINESS A.

Student Memberships

1.

The Geochemical Society wishes to initiate reduced rates for students, starting l/1/81.

2.

Council wishes the Publications Committee to negotiate a favorable student rate with Pergamon, subject to approval by Council. President Broeckex will communicate this to the Publications Committee.

B.

Geochemical Society Newsletter Council expressed an interest in reinstituting a bi-annual newsletter that would come out prior to the GSA and AGU meetings. B. Gregor (Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio) has agreed to be the editor.

c.

Geochemistry group of the American Chemical Society: D. Shaw will request that J. Kramer, our liason to the American Chemical Society, report on progress of this new group at the Spring meeting.

D.

Council requested that President Broecker appoint an individual or committee to explore the possibility of raising funds for the Geochemical Society in order to subsidize student memberships, newsletters, symposia and so forth.

E.

Council suggests to the Nominating Committee that one of the members of Council be drawn from the overseas membership.

F.

Council endorses the principle of the participation of the Geochemical Society in future Sheffield meetings.

G.

The fall 1980 meeting will be the 25th Anniversary Meeting of the Geochemical Society. President Broecker will be asked to organize a commemorative symposium.

H.

The Geological Society of America Joint Technical Program Committee has recommended that all GSA Divisions and Affiliated Societies, no matter how large or small, be allowed to hold one half-daysymposia during the GSA Annual Meeting (with up to six additional half-days to be allocated among the 15 divisions and societies). Council, representing one of the largest affiliated groups, believes this allocation is inadequate. President Broecker will authorize our Joint Technical Program Committee representative to so indicate.

I.

The Spring 1980 Council meeting will be held at the time of the Spring AGU meeting in Toronto, Ontario.
