orld Pumps is proud to announce that it is standing alongside the BPMA in next year’s Pump Industry Awards (PIA). Not only is World Pumps sponsoring the ‘Global customer service of the year’ award as it did last year, but this year the event is being promoted as ‘The BPMA Pump Industry Awards in association with World Pumps and IML exhibitions’. This magazine will do all that it can to ensure that the awards are an even greater success than last year. However, its success needs your support by placing your nominations for the various categories by going to www.worldpumps.co and clicking on the PIA button. At the World Pumps Users conference in Amsterdam it was fascinating to hear the range of topics and concerns that was at the top of many pump users’ agendas (see report on page 30). Resourcing and manpower were serious concerns. Participants agreed that there was not only a serious skill shortage, but the constant changes in staff involved in projects were a real headache. Further, the outsourcing of maintenance contracts has meant that it is becoming impossible for a dedicated team to gain familiarity with a system. These factors are being reflected in the amount of ‘avoidable’ downtime that occurs. It is a situation that can only get worse before it gets better. Alan Burrows Editor
