Global Contact Lens Care Summit – Introduction Shehzad Naroo*, BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD, FCOptom, FIACLE, FAAO, FBCLA, FEAOO Editor-in-Chief

The Global Contact Lens Care Summit, held in Seattle, Washington, USA, in late 2011, was a 2-day meeting of the brightest minds in academia, research, and clinical practice. The Summit provided a forum for the dissemination and debate of objective information and scientific evidence-supported research. I am excited to publish the latest information and the views that were presented. The Summit focused on the history, current state, and future of contact lens care and explored possible new directions for evidencebased patient care. In addition to providing an overview of the cutting-edge research being conducted in laboratories around the world, this supplement also provides practical key takeaways for clinical practices. The Summit was broken down into 5 main sections: (1) History, Evolution, and Evolving Standards of Contact Lens Care. Moderator: L. Szczotka-Flynn Presenters: D.G. Ahearn, J.T. Barr, W. (Joe) Benjamin, T. Kiang, J.J. Nichols, O.D. Schein, R.P. Stone, L. Winterton (2) Contact Lens Care and Ocular Surface Homeostasis. Moderator: N. Efron Presenters: N.A. Brennan, F.V. Bright, B.J. Glasgow, L.W. Jones, D.A. Sullivan, A. Tomlinson, J. Zhang (3) Ocular Surface Health With Contact Lens Wear. Moderator: J.P. Shovlin Presenters: P. Argueso, ¨ N. Carnt, R.L. Chalmers, N. Efron, S.M.J. Fleiszig, J.J. Nichols, K.A. Polse, F. Stapleton, L. Wiley, M. Willcox Debaters: F.V. Bright, N. Efron, L.W. Jones, N. Keir, R.C. Peterson, F. Stapleton (4) Contemporary Research in Contact Lens Care. Moderator: P.B. Morgan Presenters: F.V. Bright, S.E. Burke, R.L. Chalmers, C. Dobson, S.M.J. Fleiszig, J.C. Hutter, E. Papas, R.C. Peterson, F. Stapleton (5) What Do We Do Now? Implications for the Clinical Practice. Moderator: M. DePaolis Presenters: P. Cho, D. Cunningham, P.B. Morgan, T.G. Quinn, A.P. Saks, J.P. Shovlin I feel fortunate to have been a participant of this Summit that was truly global in nature. The presentation of findings from studies conducted at research facilities around the world and how this data related to current clinical practice offered many revelations, sometimes with implications in areas that I thought I had completely understood. At the end of the Summit, one thing was clear: the research being performed today in contact lens solutions and

materials is going to have a profound impact on how we treat tomorrow’s contact lens patients. It is important for eye care practitioners to be up to date with their knowledge and fully informed of what is going on. Many thanks to Bausch + Lomb for providing unrestricted funding and for allowing moderators and presenters to maintain complete independence with regard to the meeting content and attendee selection. As you can see below, delegates were present representing the major powerhouses in the contact lens industry and research arena. I hope you find the information in this supplement to be of use when treating your patients and that it also provides inspiration for reconsidering your own preconceived notions about contact lens care. 1.
