Larox establishes subsidiary in Russia

L

arox has received a business license to start a subsidiary operation in Russia. OOO Larox, which will be located south of Moscow, will look after the company’s after-market services in Russia. It will include a local spare-parts stock and employ mainly customer support engineers. “Russia is an important market for Larox and the establishment of a subsidiary supports our growth strategy. Our aim is to better serve our current and future customers in Russia. Delivery times will shorten thanks to the local spare-parts stock. Better level of customer service will also strengthen our new equipment sales in Russia,” said Juhana Ylikojola, Larox vice president, service. For further information, visit www.larox.com

Further job losses at Cummins

C

ummins Inc is to reduce its permanent professional workforce worldwide by at least 800 by the end of February and freeze salaries for the year, in response to the worsening global economic crisis and its impact on the company’s markets and sales. This is Cummins’ second round of job cuts. Together with the job cuts late last year,

the company will have reduced its professional workforce by more than 1400 people or 10% (see Filtration Industry Analyst, December 2008). In addition, Cummins will have reduced its hourly workforce by more than 600 and cut approximately 2500 contingent workers. As part of these latest reductions, the company will offer a second voluntary retirement package to certain active professional employees in the US. The remainder of the reductions will result from involuntary terminations from Cummins’ operations around the world. The company will also reduce the salaries of its officers by 10% for 2009. Cummins says that it will continue to monitor production volumes at individual manufacturing plants and take whatever actions are necessary as dictated by customer demand for its products. “It is unfortunate that after five straight years of record performance and greatly improved business fundamentals we are being forced to take these difficult actions,” said Tim Solso, Cummins chairman and CEO. “While these steps are very painful, they are necessary to keep Cummins competitive through this global recession so we can emerge a stronger company when the economy and our markets recover.” For further information, visit www.cummins.com

GLV cuts jobs and costs at Pulp and Paper Group

F

orty five jobs are to go at GLV Inc’s Pulp and Paper Group operations in North America and Europe, as the company reduces its operating costs in response to the global economic downturn. The job losses represent approximately 6% of the Pulp and Paper Group’s total number of employees. The job cuts will allow the Pulp and Paper Group to reduce its operating costs by C$5.5 million annually, but will result in non-recurring restructuring costs of C$2.5 million–C$3.0 million, which will be recorded in the third and fourth quarters of fiscal year 2009. GLV says that the current economic uncertainty is leading pulp and paper producers to postpone their large investment projects for new infrastructures. “This situation has started

NEWS/IN BRIEF to slow down the Pulp and Paper Group’s order bookings in relation to new equipment projects, which is why we decided to immediately proceed with a streamlining of its North American and European organization,” explained Richard Verreault, president and chief operating officer of GLV. Verreault said that the measures taken also provide for a stronger focus of its business development efforts in the aftermarket, where demand remains solid. “We are confident that the group will continue to perform well in the aftermarket, especially since it recently set up a European business model similar to the one that has proven successful in North America for several years,” added Verreault.

program for an indefinite period of time. Since announcing the program in October 2006, ITT has purchased approximately US$431 million of outstanding common stock. Prior to this extension, the program was set to expire in November 2009. “During these volatile times, we intend to remain focused on preserving liquidity,” said Denise Ramos, senior vice president and chief financial officer, ITT. “The extension of the repurchase program, coupled with ITT’s strong free cash flow generation, gives us the flexibility to continue improving our net debt position, while maintaining strategic investments in our long-term growth.”

Temporary layoffs likely at Ahlstrom filtration facility

Genoil enters licensing, manufacturing agreement with Korean manufacturer

A

hlstrom Corp has started negotiations with personnel representatives in Tampere, Finland, which may lead to temporary layoffs for approximately 60 people. The Tampere plant produces filtration materials, and employs 60 people. The move is part of restructuring measures across the group which could include plant closures in Italy and temporary and permanent layoffs worldwide. The restructuring measures are in response to weakening demand. According to preliminary information, Ahlstrom’s full year operating profit for 2008 will be approximately 40 million, down from 68 million in 2007 excluding non-recurring items. Net sales in 2008 are estimated at 1800 million, up from 1761 million in 2007. Ahlstrom will publish its 2008 results on 5 February 2009. For further information, visit www.ahlstrom.com

outh Korea’s DongHwa Entec Co Ltd will license, for a five year period, Genoil Inc’s bilge water separation technology for ships, industrial fields and off-shore rigs manufactured or retrofitted in Korea, China and Japan. Additionally, DongHwa will also build the Genoil bilge water separator units for sale by Genoil. DongHwa is a major manufacturer of heat exchangers and related multi-stage water generators for a number of industries including marine. David Lifschultz, Genoil’s chairman and CEO, said they were very pleased to be working with DongHwa as a marketing and manufacturing partner. “DongHwa accounts for the majority of all marine heat exchangers used in ships. For example, in both Korea and China they account for 70% of the shipping industry’s heat exchangers and in Japan that rate is 60%. This bodes well for us as DongHwa is positioned to use its leverage to book bilge cleaner sales,” said Lifschultz. He described the DongHwa agreement as an important milestone in the evolution of Genoil.
