Great Lakes introduces WeldPro air filtration products Great Lakes Air Systems reports that it has introduced the RoboVent WeldPro air filtration system, which the company claims ensures “cost-effective compliance to US federal regulations on emissions.” The WeldPro is a free-standing, self-contained air cleaning system that recycles contaminated air using a self-cleaning filtering system. The design can be placed in front of a work area, bench, or fixture for a seamless fit into most workstations. Since the WeldPro is designed to be positioned at the welding point, it can capture 100% of the smoke and contaminants right at the source.

BMW and Volkswagen engines to use Mann+Hummel designs German company Mann+Hummel has developed a compact oil filter module for the six-cylinder petrol engine that will power the new BMW 3 Series car. The firm has also started production of a cylinder-head cover, with an integrated oil separator, for Volkswagen’s 3.2-litre V6 FSI engine. Because of its extremely compact design, the oil filter fits comfortably into the restricted installation space that is available. An integrated oil-water heat-exchanger cools the engine’s lubricating oil. Other features include an oil pressure switch – controlling the oil pressure of the engine – while an anti-drain valve prevents the oil from leaving the feed line when the engine is switched off, ensuring the supply of oil is not interrupted, even in critical conditions (such as during coldstarts). The filter by-pass valve also maintains the oil supply. It is activated when the filter element becomes blocked, in the event that this has not been changed at the correct time. It also protects the filter element from damage, in case of excessive pressure differentials.
The WeldPro’s self-contained design negates the need for an expensive and inefficient central exhaust system, reports the company. The WeldPro distributes the job of cleaning the air, “eliminating the possibility of total system failure and reducing production delays and downtime during routine maintenance.” “The WeldPro is a better solution than the ducted fume arm filtration systems, typically used for manual welding, because the WeldPro can be moved anywhere in the plant without moving ductwork and it captures and cleans the air, returning clean air to the plant,” said Jim Reid, vice president of Great Lakes Air Systems. “This results in significant energy savings.” www.greatlakesfilters.com

Tracedetect’s arsenic analyser wins award Tracedetect Inc of Seattle, Washington, USA, an analytical instrumentation company that specialises in products that measure trace metals, has scooped the People’s Choice Award at ACE 05, The 124th annual conference of the American Water Works Association (AWWA); the company’s SafeGuard analyser won in the category of the “most useful new or improved product”. TraceDetect claims that SafeGuard is the first automated analyser with the accuracy that is required to meet the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established arsenic limit for drinking water.
Water quality analysts are accustomed to waiting two weeks for arsenic analyses from off-site laboratories. In addition to the prolonged health risks to customers, violators risk stiff fines for each day their arsenic levels exceed the limit. SafeGuard reportedly reduces those risks by
displaying test results on-site in 30 minutes, says Tracedetect. “We are pleased at the overwhelming positive response to our SafeGuard arsenic analyser,” said Richard Brewer, chief executive officer of Tracedetect. “Our goal is to provide community water-quality departments with a way to track their arsenic levels.
