Great Lakes moves antimony manufacturing to Mexico Great Lakes Chemical Corporation is switching all global production for its antimony and synergists business to the company's Reynosa site in Mexico. The company says that concentrating production at the site means that it can lower manufacturing costs while maintaining quality. The Reynosa manufacturing plant is said to have good manufacturing flexibility in

mulations as a synergist in

the conversion of antimony metal, crude antimony trioxide and antimony sulphide concentrates into finished antimony derivatives. Great Lakes says that the Reynosa site is ISO 9000 certified and customers will maintain regional access to finished products in Europe, Japan, Asia-Pacific and the Americas. Antimony trioxide is used in flame retardant polymer for-

combination with brominated

flame retardants. It is also used in PVC formulations for maximum flame retardancy and speciality grades are used as catalysts in the manufacture of PET. Contact: Great Lakes Chemical Corporation Tel" +44 161 875 3229 www.greatlakeschem, corn

Degradable plastic packaging manufacturer raises cash for growth Symphony HasticsTechnologies has concluded its Offer for Subscription and raised over £2 million. The company specializesin degradable plastic packaging products. At the offer price, the company has a market capitalization of£18.03 million and the shares will be traded on OFEX. Chief executive of Symphony Michael Laurier said: "I am delighted at the results of our OFEX offer. The capital raised via our admission to OFEX will help us to continue our strong growth in both the UK and overseas markets and guarantee the position of Symphony at the cutting edge of the global plastics industry." Symphony Plastic Technologies develops and provides a wide

range of degradable plastic products to the retail, local authority, food and medical markets. The company's SPITekTM and Tuffy(~ range of plastic products are based on the additive DCP TM Degradable Compostable Plastics, which when blended with polyethylene during the normal production processes causes the plastic to degrade into carbon dioxide and water at a controllable rate depending on application requirements. The company adds that product life times until degradation can be controlled from several months to several years. The current global polyethylene market is £45 billion and the majority of this plastic cannot

be recycled because it is generally contaminated or commercially inaccessible. Symphony says that use of its degradable packaging could improve the average lifespan and productivity of a landfill site by 20-25%. SPI-Tek products are being manufactured in the UK, Middle East and the Far East. The range includes carrier bags, refuse sacks, food bags, bread bags and compost bags. Symphony has also acquired 30% of a joint venture company in Abu Dhabi, Symphony Bin Hilal Plastics, to set up a large scale manufacturing plant.
