LIBRARY STEPS
Hand Made: Library Steps E. Jeff Justis, MD
I had seen pictures of library steps with a quarterturn spiral but never one with a handrail, so designing this one presented an engineering challenge. I used mahogany throughout, and, although From the Campbell Clinic (retired), Germantown, TN. Received for publication March 11, 2011; accepted in revised form March 14, 2011. I had to segment the turnings for construction purposes, each finished post came from one piece of wood. If one had to assign a period to this design, I would think it would fit into a late Federal style or perhaps Victorian (mid to late nineteenth century). Each step is 61 cm (24 in) wide, the height from the floor to the top step is approximately 76 cm (30 in), and the total height of the library steps is 177.8 cm (70 in). This piece (Figs. 1, 2) required about 4 months of part-time work to construct. Working full-time, I believe it could be built in a week to 10 days.
