Book Review Brompton Hospital Reports. Vol. VII. 1989. London :
Brompton Hospital. pp. v + i + 207. Price 5s. net (5s. 6d. post free). The latest in the series of Brompton Hospital reports deals as usual with many aspects of thoracic disease. Out of twenty articles, nine deal exclusively with tuberculosis matters, and others have an interest for the Tuberculosis Officer from the point of view of the differential diagnosis of those cases which are sent to him for an opinion. The articles on Extrapleural Pneumothorax will be a help to those who are seeking information about this comparatively new development in the major surgical treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. The article on Thoracoscopy and Cauterisation of Adhesions presents the case for this operation very well. The author in each case is Mr. R. C. Brock. This volume of reports maintains the high standard of its predecessors, and can be thoroughly recommended to all who wish to keep abreast with the latest ideas in thoracic medicine and surgery. Motherhood.--Messrs. Cow & Gate, Ltd., Guildford, a firm which is very well known to the public health service, have just issued a fifth and enlarged edition of their book with the above title. This edition runs to 270 pages, including an index, and its copious illustrations include some charming photographs of young C. & G. drinkers, amongst whom are the daughter of Princess Paul of Jugo-Slavia and the St. Neot's quadruplets. "Motherhood " is described as "a guide for mothers" and we think that few M. & C.W. medical officers would quarrel with the excellent advice on the ante-natal regime and on the care of infants and young children which is given here. There are also some useful details of the various specialised milk foods produced by Cow & Gate. The price of ls. is extremely moderate for so well produced a book.
