Hazards in the ChemicalLaboyatory,

Quote, “The information contained in this book has been compiled by recognised authorities from sources believed to be reliable and to represent the best opinions on the subject as of 1976”. A member of the U.K. Health and Safety Executive gives an introductory chapter in which an overview is presented of the nine chaptas which follow. These include the Health and Safety at Work, etc.; Act of 1974; Planning for Safety; Fire Protection; Beactive Chemical Hazards; Chemical Hazards and Toxicology; Medical Servick and First Aid; Hazardous Chemicals; Safety in Hospital Biochemistry Laboratories; and Precautions against Radiations. The subject matter of each chapter is presented in clear and concise terms and Chapter 8, on Hazardous Chemicals, which is by far the largest, is particularly valuable since it includes monographs describing briefly the hazardous properties, including references to dangerous reactions and effects upon the human body, of over 460 flammable, explosive, corrosive and/or toxic substances or groups of substances commonly used in chemical laboratories. It also recommends first aid and fire-fighting procedures in the case of accidents and suggests methods for dealing with spillages. The book is welcome in view of the increased responsibility placed upon everyone to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that a safe and healthy working situation prevails. J.D.M.
