BASIC PROBLEMSIN BURNS. SYMPOSIUMFOR THE TREATMENTOF BURNS. By R. VRABEC,Z. KONICKOVAand J. MOSEROVA.Pp. xii+224, with 61 illustrations. (Berlin, Heidelberg, New York: Springer-Verlag, 1975.) This book contains the proceedings of a symposium held in Prague in September 1973 by the Czechoslovakian Society of Plastic Surgeons on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the Prague Burns Unit. The majority of the contributions are from Czechoslovakia and neighbouring countries although there are a few from Western Europe and the United States of America. The papers are arranged in four groups: Surgery of the bum wound; Anaesthesiology, resuscitation and intensive care; Septicaemia; Complications of the bum illness. The section on surgery of the bum wound is perhaps the most interesting and gives a clear impression of a return to the use of early surgical excision in the treatment of large burns combined with the use of autogenous mesh grafts and xenografts. The papers in all sections are predominantly based on clinical practice. With such a book appearing 2 years after the event, it is inevitable that the information will have already appeared in journals and it seems very doubtful if publishing this type of material in book form, in hard back covers, is justified. It would be much better presented in a less elegant form but soon after the event. I. F. K. MUIR
THE HANDATLAS. By MOULTON K. JOHNSON and MYLE~J. COHEN. First edition. Pp. xi + 94, with 113 illustrations. (Springfield, Illinois: Charles C. Thomas.) Price $22.00. This is a practical guide to the anatomy of the hand for surgeons. Unlike most anatomy text books it is illustrated with photographs of freshly dissected specimens; this gives the work a reality which cannot be matched by the artist’s brush. The specimens have obviously been dissected with great skill. This combined with excellent photographs, highlighted when necessary, makes the detailed anatomy extremely clear. The arterial network has been injected with red latex which makes the clarity of the colour plates outstanding. Tendon sheaths have also been injected with black Silastic. The anatomy of the hand is depicted layer by layer beginning with the skin and ending with interesting X-ray studies of the bones and joints. It is a pity that such an excellent production should be marred by some confusion in the labelling of figure numbers, particularly where one is referred back in the text to inappropriate illustrations. There are also some surprising spelling errors including that of Kanavel no fewer than 6 times. Otherwise, it is a high-quality production with a refreshing clarity of layout and an avoidance of overmuch detail although all the essential anatomy for the hand surgeon is included. Wisely, the authors have used the terminology which was published by the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand and now in standard use by hand surgeons. This atlas is highly recommended to anyone concerned in surgery of the hand. D. A. C. &ID
