NEW PLANTS Butamax JV gets Kansas ethanol facility to demonstrate bioisobutanol process Butamax, a 50–50 joint venture of BP and DuPont, has acquired Nesika Energy and its state-of-the-art ethanol plant in Scandia, KS, US, which Butamax plans to use to demonstrate its bio-isobutanol technology. Butamax will now begin detailed engineering work to add bio-isobutanol capacity to the plant, while continuing to produce ethanol before and after adding the bioisobutanol. Value of the transaction and a schedule for the project were not given. The Nesika facility will serve to demonstrate the company's technology at scale, as well as validate process and biocatalyst improvements.

Zhejiang awards contract to DuPont for refining & PC project in China Zhejiang Petroleum and Chemical Co (ZPC) has awarded a contract to DuPont for a sulfuric acid regeneration (SAR) unit as part of ZPC's refining and petrochemical (PC) project being built on Dayushan Island in China. The $15 bn project, which is the "largest'' privately-led refining and petrochemical project in China, will be executed in two phases with the first phase coming on stream in late 2018. After completion, the complex will have a refining capacity of 40 M tonnes/y. Under the contract, DuPont will provide the engineering, technology licence and proprietary equipment for a MECS SAR unit, licensed by DuPont Clean Technologies, which will have a capacity to

regenerate 858 tonnes of spent sulfuric acid. DuPont's SAR dry gas technology produces the desired sulfuric acid products for upstream alkylation, acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate unit performance. Honeywell received a contract in early 2017 to provide a range of Honeywell UOP technologies for the project, including processes for the production of 4 M tonnes/y of para-xylene, and construction of a new Oleflex propane dehydrogenation unit to produce 600,000 tonnes/y of polymer-grade propylene.

Diamond Green Diesel to expand renewable fuel capacity using Ecofining technology from Honeywell UOP On 17 Mar 2017, Honeywell UOP announced that the Diamond Green Diesel facility in Norco, LA, US, will expand its production capacity of renewable diesel from 10,000 barrels/d to 18,000 barrels/d, using Honeywell UOP's Ecofining process technology. Diamond Green Diesel, which is owned by Valero Energy Corp and Darling Ingredients Inc., is the largest commercial advanced biofuel facility in the US. The company plans to complete the expansion in 2Q 2018. The Diamond Green Diesel facility converts inedible oils and other waste feedstocks to produce Honeywell Green Diesel, a high-quality renewable fuel. Unlike biodiesel, renewable diesel produced using the Ecofining process is chemically identical to petroleum-based diesel and can be used as a drop-in replacement in vehicles with no modifications. It also features up to an 80% lifecycle reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared with diesel from petroleum. Fuel produced at the facility is qualified as "BiomassBased Diesel,'' an Advanced Biofuel under the US Environmental Protection Agency's Renewable Fuel Standard, which requires a minimum volume of transportation fuels sold in the US to contain renewable fuel as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Honeywell UOP jointly developed the Ecofining process with Eni SpA.

Waste-to-methanol project still in talks By late 2017, a decision could be made by an AkzoNobel-led consortium regarding the development of a waste-to-methanol plant that
would allow the parties to buy large quantities of biobased materials. AkzoNobel does not anticipate taking ownership or an operational share in the business. The consortium includes Air Liquide of France, Enerkem of Canada, Van Gansenwinkel Group and AVR of Netherlands, and the Rotterdam Port Authority. According to the CEO of AkzoNobel, the site of the plant is on discussion but the Port of Rotterdam is currently the frontrunner site under consideration. The plant would process waste via synthetic gas into methanol using the process developed by Enerkem. According to AkzoNobel, the methanol products could be used for the production of dimethyl ether (DME), monochloroacetic acid (MCA), and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The group has yet to disclosed the capacity of the plant but according to a spokesperson for AkzoNobel, 360,000 tonnes waste would generate 220,000 tonnes of methanol. Investment decision could be reached depending on the licensing procedures and overall business case for the project by end-2017.

Helm plans biobased ethyl acetate plant Germany-based Helm will sell biobased ethyl acetate made by Greenyug at the planned plant of Greenyug in Columbus, NE, US. Prairie Catalytic has been formed by Greenyug, which will own and run the manufacturing plant. Under the deal, Helm will produce significant amounts of biobased ethyl acetate available to the market for the first time. The Prairie Catalytic plant will be built close to the corn processing facility of Archer Daniels Midland in Columbus, NE, which will provide the project with bioethanol feedstock and other services. The project's construction is scheduled to begin during 2017, with start-up expected to commence around one year later. The ethyl acetate produced from the Prairie Catalytic plant will be exclusively marketed by Helm. The deal further boosts the global presence of Helm and increases its existing competence in ethyl acetate distribution. The global ethyl acetate market exceeds $4 bn.
