Corporate strategy: Kao president set to take on overseas markets

Kao reorganizes production, development in Asia

Kao Corp is strengthening its operations overseas, as demonstrated by its recent acquisition of US hair care firm John Frieda Professional Hair Care Inc. Kao is also planning to start sales of cosmetics in China in 2003. The firm is aiming to increase sales overseas from 24% to 30% of total sales by fiscal 2005 or 2006. The company’s new technology for manufacture of its detergent product, Attack, has allowed it to concentrate production at two factories instead of four, and an earlier target of Yen 5 bn in overall cost reductions is expected to be increased to Yen 7 bn as a result. Kao has seen prices of products such as shampoo and detergent fall by 1-2% in 1H fiscal 2002 compared with 1H fiscal 2001, representing a decrease of 13-14% compared with prices in the mid 1990s, and does not expect this trend to halt in the near future.

Kao Corp has consolidated its production bases for products such as plant alcohol, shampoo and detergent in Southeast Asia, in response to the steep reduction in tariffs in the region, and stable access to raw materials. The firm’s subsidiary in Malaysia has begun operations at a new facility in Penang, which has a production capacity of 50,000 tonnes/y of plant alcohol. The subsidiary’s total production capacity is now 165,000 tonnes/y. Kao’s factories in Thailand and Indonesia are being developed as production bases for household products in Southeast Asia, with an Indonesian factory taking over production of shampoos and other products which were made at a recently closed factory in Kuala Lumpur.
