The company says that Uvasil 816 offers higher performance in specific applications, such as LDPE greenhouse film, where it provides greater resistance to pesticides. Uvasi1299 is already an established UV stabilizer for polypropylene film, but has now gained FDA approval for applications using these films. Third party masterbatching costs can be avoided. The company adds that NDBs can be incorporated into polyoleflns and engineering plastics. Tolerances for additive use can be reduced to +3%

pobroer compared with +20% for powder blends. According to the company, users will need reduced quantities of additives and have easier and improved conversion operations. NDBs have good flow properties and improved industrial hygiene is achieved

due to high abrasion resistance. Good incorporation of the NDBs into the polymer occurs due to a high melting rate - the binder is the lowest melting point additive. Great Lakes says that customers for NDBs include compounders, masterbatch manufacturers and large converters with extrusion equipment. The low L:D ratio of :injection moulding machines means there is normally insufficient mixing capability for the use of NDBs by moulders. An advisory service is available for potential users to help achieve the most suitable formulation for a specific product. Additive levels can be streamlined to reduce the number of blends that need to held in stock. For new compounding operations, there is a reduced investment as less equipment is required to handle NDBs compared with powder additives.. High value pink pigment for plastics introduced by Ciba The colours operation of Ciba Specialty Chemicals has launched Ciba® Cromophtal® Pink PT. The plastics pigment is a strong, blue-shade pink (quincridone; CI Pigment Red 122) that exhibits high colour strength, good fastness properties and dispersability. The company adds that it performs well in many polymers and is recommended for use in flexible and rigid PVC,

polyolefins, styrenics, rubber and most engineering plastics. In addition, it remains effective at low concentrations, making it a good shading component, particularly in polyolefins and PVC. Ciba also recommends the material for fibre applications and Cromophtal Pink PT is particularly useful in polypropylene and polyester terephthalate.

The pigment is included on the Erench Positive List and meets the requirements of many other national and industry regulations and standards. It is therefore particularly recommended for food contact applications Ciba says that Cromophtal Pink PT has proved effective for the coloration of plastics for a wide variety of indoor and outdoor end-use applications.
