PATENTS Japanese patents JO728371-6

Polypropylene with various stabilizers Mitsui Petrochemical Industry Co Ltd Priority date: 13 April 1994 A sequence of patents describes polypropylene compositions with high stereo-regularity, using a number of different stabilizers: fatty acid metal salts, phenolics, hindered amines, thioethers and organo- phosphites. The polypropylene has a Melt Flow Rate of O.l-5OOg/lO minutes at 230°C stereoregularity indices of 0.970-0.995 (M5) and 0.0020-0.0050 (M3) and 60% or more degree of crystallization. The combination of this polypropylene with the specific stabilizers is claimed as new. For compounds for sheet, film and other extruded products and moulded articles, the compositions give mouldings with good mechanical strength and resistance to heat, weather and moisture. JO7278792 Manufacture of transparent electrically conducting film Teijin Ltd Priority date: 4 April 1994 Transparent electrically conductive films can be produced by incorporating tin oxide and/or indium oxide, and irradiating the film with electron or ion beams, to control the size of crystals. JO8109337 Black organic pigments for LCD filters Mitsui Toatsu Chemicals Inc and Yamamoto Kasei KK Priority date: 7 October 1994 A black organic pigment, which can be used for black matrices for colour filters in liquid crystal displays, as well as in plastics, elastomers, fibres, paints and printing inks, is obtained by the condensation reaction of an imino compound of prescribed formula with a carbonyl compound having a hydrogen atom in the alpha-position.

Additives for Polymers

The pigment is very safe, gives an excellent match with resins, excellent resistance to light, heat, solvents and water, and can be dispersed uniformly in various media. JO8109340 Metallic pigment for plastics Nippon Glass Fiber Co Ltd Priority date: 12 October 1994 A metallic pigment comprising metal-coated powder with a particle size of 30-500 pm, can be obtained by grinding glass or silica sand, with a smooth fracture surface. The metal can be gold or silver. The pigment is not affected when kneaded and moulded with synthetic resins such as polyethylene, PVC or ABS, and produces mouldings with bright appearance and no weld-line mark. JO8 109300 Stabilizers for halogen-containing resins Koriyama Kasei KK Priority date: 19. August 1994 Stabilizers for halogen-containing resins may comprise sulphur-containing organotin compounds. They have good resistance to colouring during heating, particularly in the initial stages, and have little smell of thiols. JO8199039 POM compound with low friction Asahi Kasei Kogyo KK Priority date: 26 January 1995 A polyoxymethylene (POM) compound with low coefficient of friction comprises a polyamide, hindered phenol, aromatic vinylmodified polyethylene and a fatty acid ester. It has a low coefficient of friction under conditions of low temperature after exposure to high temperature and humidity, and can be used as a sliding material for precision machinery, business machines and automobile components. JO8109320 Flame-retardant polyester resin Polyplastics KK Priority date: 13 October 1994 The compound is prepared by adding to a thermoplastic polyester resin a graft copolymer of an ethylene-unsaturated carboxylic
